Under the direct supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, the Fleet Foreman supervises a group of tradespeople, typically 4-7 staff, assigned to major shop areas within the City of Spruce Grove. This position provides shop floor supervision to ensure work is performed proficiently and timely, staff work safely, and management standards are maintained. The Fleet Foreman also ensures staff attendance and task entries are recorded accurately and that provisions under the Union Agreement are followed.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure work is completed properly, aiming to meet deadlines and keep costs within estimates unless unforeseen issues arise.
- Assign work orders/tasks based on staff competencies and skills.
- Monitor progress and provide guidance when issues occur.
- Communicate material requirements timely to prevent delays.
- Seek direction from the Fleet Supervisor if deadlines are at risk or costs are higher than estimated.
- Review completed jobs with staff for quality assurance.
- Ensure safety procedures and job protocols are followed, including PPE issuance and tool oversight.
- Coordinate with Parts Technicians on supplies needed and authorize purchase of parts/materials within authority limits.
- Conduct regular toolbox meetings and implement safety improvements identified during inspections.
- Ensure accurate time entry into Cartegraph and Avanti systems, and review staff time entries.
- Manage staff vacation requests and discuss concerns in supervisor meetings.
- Assist in leading the Fleet Management team and Protective Services employees in vehicle and equipment repairs.
- Oversee daily shop operations, including remote locations, under the guidance of the Supervisor of Fleet Management.
- Provide technical support and diagnostics, and oversee preventative maintenance scheduling.
- Ensure repairs are efficient, effective, and safe, complying with safety systems and regulations.
- Inspect shop environment and equipment regularly to maintain safety standards.
- Develop and review hazard assessments, SWPs, and SOPs.
- Monitor quality of work, ensure proper documentation, and review work orders before closure.
- Maintain compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Foster positive stakeholder relations, respond courteously to inquiries, and manage vendor relationships.
- Ensure safety policies are followed, and contribute to a positive safety culture.
Qualifications:
- Valid Alberta Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician certification.
- At least 2 years in a leadership role, preferably unionized.
- Minimum 5 years in fleet maintenance and repair of various vehicle types.
- Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certification for heavy trucks, light trucks, trailers, and buses.
- Valid Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with a clean driving record.
- Red Seal Automotive Service Technician certification is an asset.
- Alberta Journeyman Welding Certificate is an asset.
- Municipal environment experience and management training are assets.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain productive work output.
