Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The position focuses on preparing and serving food and snacks in a community-based distribution model, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, and providing general support to the food operations. It involves working with vulnerable populations including children, youth, and adults.
Accountabilities
The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.
- Sets up the serving equipment i.e., tables, Cambro's, warming trays.
- Ensures the safety of clients through proper handling of food according to food standards.
- Follows legislative procedures and Salvation Army standards for clean and dirty dishes.
- Ensures the appropriate disposal of food waste in accordance with regulations.
- Maintains cleanliness of kitchen/equipment (washing dishes, cleaning tables, kitchen floors, and other kitchen equipment).
- Keeps simple records and completes incident reports as necessary.
- Prepare simple foods and drinks.
- Create a meal plan that considers the Canada Food Guide for healthy options.
- Collect and report statistical information as required
Health & Safety
- Always maintain exceptional personal cleanliness.
- Handwashing and use of provided personal protective equipment (gloves, aprons, etc.) is mandatory.
- Adhere to safe food handling procedures, including proper storage, preparation, and cooking methods to prevent cross-contamination and foodborne illnesses.
- Operate all kitchen equipment safely and responsibly, adhering to proper usage guidelines to prevent accidents.
- Understand and abide by hazard communication protocols, including the correct use and storage of cleaning chemicals and potential allergen identification.
- Apply proper lifting and carrying techniques for heavy items to avoid physical strain or injury.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Internal: Ministry Unit leadership and staff
External: Participants (Children, Youth, Adults)
Managerial/Technical Responsibilities
Reports directly to the Corps Officer(s).
Direct reports: none.
Financial And Material Management
- Assist with ordering, receiving and stocking food and kitchen supply orders.
- Minor material responsibilities, e.g., proper use and safekeeping of purchased food and donations.
- Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
- Does not process any financial transactions but may have minor budget responsibilities e.g., with food purchase requests.

Working Conditions
- This position requires long hours standing on hard surfaces.
- This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
- This position requires safely climbing in and out of vehicles.
- Use of various cleaning chemicals and tools (e.g. broom, mop, etc.).
- Use of kitchen tools and appliances (e.g., knives, stove/oven, dishwasher, warming trays, Cambros, etc.)
- This position requires individuals to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
- This position requires the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and wet settings, both indoors and outdoors, as part of regular job duties.
- This position may require operating a large commercial sized food truck.
- This position requires the ability to lift and transport up to 30lbs (13.6kg).
Education, Experience And Qualifications
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.
Education, Qualifications And Certifications
- Some high school completion.
- Current Food Safe Certification is required.
- Standard First Aid + CPR & AED.
- Class 5 Driver's License is required (Class 4 is considered an asset).
- WHMIS certification is considered an asset.
- Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Secotor Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
Experience And Knowledge
- Up to 3 months of related experience is an asset.
- Experience operating a large commercial vehicle (Food Truck) is an asset.
- Experience with food preparation and distribution.
- Previous experience working with children and youth is considered an asset.
Skills And Capabilities
- Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols and Fleet Vehicle (including Commercial) screening and training.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Able to adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced kitchen
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $15.65 to $16.90 with a maximum of $20.28.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
