Mechanical Assembler
Peterborough, Ontario
Build the Systems That Support Allied Naval Missions Around the World

At Fairbanks Morse Defense, you won't be assembling products on a production line, you'll help build advanced naval handling systems trusted by the Royal Canadian Navy, U.S. Navy, Royal Navy (UK), Royal Australian Navy, and other allied defense partners.

Our Peterborough facility, formerly a Rolls-Royce Global Centre of Excellence for Naval Handling Systems, is now the Canadian headquarters for Fairbanks Morse Defense's Naval Systems business. Here, we design and manufacture highly engineered equipment used aboard some of the world's most advanced military vessels.

From launch and recovery systems for autonomous underwater vehicles to mission bay handling equipment, sonar handling systems, shock-hardened winches, and heavy mechanical assemblies, every project directly supports modern naval operations across the globe.

If you're someone who takes pride in precision craftsmanship, enjoys solving mechanical challenges, and wants your work to have real-world impact, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Do

As a Mechanical Assembler, you'll assemble, integrate, test, and troubleshoot complex mechanical systems while working alongside engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver mission-critical equipment that meets the highest military standards.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Assemble parts correctly to achieve specific tolerances as noted on engineering drawings.
  • Perform system setup and integration prior to testing.
  • Operate overhead cranes and lift trucks as required.
  • Assist Engineering with testing and troubleshooting both electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Provide input on best practices for assembly and testing processes.
  • Assist Manufacturing Engineering in diagnosing production issues and developing solutions.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance to ensure finished products meet company quality standards.
  • Perform service work as required.
  • Interface with customers during equipment testing.
What You'll Be Building

You'll help manufacture highly specialized naval equipment including:

  • Launch & Recovery Systems (LARS)
  • Shock-hardened winches
  • Heavy-duty mechanical assemblies
  • Systems used to launch and recover autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), rescue craft, and mission equipment aboard naval vessels.

Every assembly must perform reliably in demanding marine environments where precision, quality, and reliability are essential.

Basic Qualifications
  • Trade school, Mechanical Technician, Electrical Technician, or equivalent experience.
  • Licensed Millwright or equivalent mechanical experience.
  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to teach, mentor, and learn from fellow team members.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and solution-oriented during testing, equipment troubleshooting, and demanding production schedules.
Why Join Fairbanks Morse Defense?

This is far more than a traditional mechanical assembly position.

You'll work on sophisticated mechanical systems that support next-generation naval programs, helping build equipment that deploys autonomous underwater vehicles, recovers sonar arrays, and enables critical maritime defense operations around the world.

If you're looking for meaningful work where craftsmanship, precision, and engineering excellence come together, this is an opportunity to build technology that truly matters.
