Job summary

Syilx Forestry Working Group is seeking on-call seasonal Fisheries Field Technicians in Penticton to support the Sockeye broodstock collection and field monitoring program. Work will be September to October, up to 40 hrs/week with flexibility for weekend shifts and some Central Okanagan fieldwork.

Applicants should be comfortable near streams and in varying fall weather. Prior fisheries field experience and safety training are assets; commitment and reliability are essential.

Qualifications

• Work experience in fisheries related field work is preferred.
• Knowledge of fish identification an asset.
• Valid class 5 BC driver's license, swift water training, and First Aid an asset.
• Must be comfortable and feel safe working in and around water and working in all weather conditions.
• Willingness to work early mornings and weekends is required
• Reliable and good work ethics.
• Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Syilx/ First Nations ancestry

Responsibilities

• Fish capture through beach seining in the Okanagan River.
• Collecting salmon carcasses while wading the river.
• Stream walks counting salmon.
• Fish culture; broodstock prep, milt collection, egg take and fertilization, egg picking.
• Other duties as required of projects.
