Job summary

GEMTEC is seeking a motivated Field Technician to join our Ottawa Team. You will collect samples, perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials, and prepare detailed field reports for project managers and engineers.

This seasonal role runs from immediately until year-end, approximately 5 hours per week depending on client workload. Candidates should have a related diploma, knowledge of ASTM/CSA standards, a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to work outdoors in varying

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Geotechnical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • OACETT is an asset.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Experience in materials testing and inspection is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect samples and perform laboratory and field testing of construction materials.
  • Conduct compaction testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete.
  • Test fresh concrete/grout/mortar and cast laboratory specimens.
  • Prepare detailed field reports with test results and recommendations.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Job description

GEMTEC is a growing firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada and in Ontario, and we are looking for a motivated and skilled Field Technician to join our Ottawa Team. Main Duties
  • Collect samples and perform laboratory and field testing of various construction materials, such as concrete, asphalt, soils, aggregates, etc., to determine material properties and quality.
  • Compaction testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete;
  • Testing of fresh concrete/grout/mortar and casting of laboratory specimens;
  • Conduct inspections and assessments of construction sites, document findings and provide detailed reports on test results, including analysis and recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate field reports for use by project managers and engineers.
  • Maintain effective communication with project teams, providing regular updates on field activities and findings.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with the project team to troubleshoot and resolve any materials-related issues.
  • Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
  • Capability to walk and engage in fieldwork for extended periods across occasionally challenging terrain, as well as the ability to transport equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Identify and mitigate potential hazards in the field, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Adhering to all company policies.
  • Other duties as required.
Educational & Experience Requirements
  • Diploma or degree in Geotechnical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in materials testing and inspection is preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant testing methods and procedures, including ASTM and CSA standards
  • OACETT is an asset.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Position
  • Seasonal Position from immediately until the end of the year
  • 5 hours/week (varies with client workload)
Pay Range

$22.00 - $26.00 CAD hourly

In alignment with Ontario’s Employment Standards Act and pay‑transparency requirements, GEMTEC includes the expected compensation range in publicly advertised job postings for roles based in Ontario. This range reflects what GEMTEC reasonably anticipates paying for this position. Final compensation will be based on the successful candidate’s education, experience, skills, internal pay equity, specific Ontario location, or other factors unrelated to Ontario‑protected grounds.
