Job summary

ABB is seeking a Field Service Technician to deliver high-quality technical support for power systems in the Edmonton area. This hybrid role involves installations, maintenance, repairs, and project execution with a focus on safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.

You will lead service projects, mentor teams, and coordinate with sales to expand ABB's service footprint while maintaining strong customer relationships and profitability.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of field service experience on high/medium/low voltage power equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of switchgear, transformers, protection and control systems.
  • Willingness to travel locally and nationally up to 50%, and to work overtime as needed.

  • Deliver high-quality field service support including testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, upgrades, and installations.
  • Lead HSE activities at customer sites and report unsafe practices.

As a Field Service Technician, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality technical support and service to our customers.

You will perform installations, maintenance, and repairs on equipment, ensuring optimal performance. You will be delivering innovative power solutions, working on field service projects, and building lasting customer partnerships.

The work model for the role is: Hybrid

This role is contributing to the Electrification Field Service Team in Edmonton Alberta.

This role reports to: Field Service Manager

Responsibilities:
  • Applying safety rules and safe practices, as well as environmental responsibilities during all service activities.
  • Leading Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) activities at customer sites and reporting unsafe practices and incidents to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Identifying new service business opportunities in close cooperation with customers and ABB teams.
  • Working with technicians and engineers developing, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to clients.
  • Provide expert field service support for high, medium, and low voltage power systems, including testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair, upgrades, retrofits, and installations.
  • Apply strong technical knowledge of transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems, and power distribution equipment; experience with relays, GIS, and SF6 systems is an asset.
  • Lead and execute service projects safely and efficiently, developing work scopes, supporting estimates, and delivering projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Coordinate and direct team activities while driving productivity, operational excellence, and continuous improvement through process standardization and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships, identify service growth opportunities, and collaborate closely with sales teams to expand the customer base and support business objectives.
  • Utilize strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and business acumen to develop practical power system solutions while ensuring customer satisfaction and profitability.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience servicing, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, upgrading, and installing high, medium, and low voltage power distribution equipment.
  • Strong expertise in electrical power systems, including switchgear, transformers, protection and control systems, with relay testing and commissioning considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally 50% of the time, work overtime/weekends and respond to weekend and off-hours service requests as required
  • Proven ability to safely lead and execute field service projects, ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards and environmental protection procedures.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to independently manage projects, and deliver work on time, on budget, and to high quality standards.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting capabilities for complex power delivery equipment and systems.
  • Proficient in interpreting and developing technical documentation, procedures, electrical drawings, and service work scopes.
  • Experienced in using power system testing equipment and applying industry-standard testing and commissioning procedures.
  • Excellent customer relationship management, business development, and sales support skills, with a focus on identifying service opportunities and delivering value-added solutions.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities, with proven success building collaborative relationships with customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Engineer or Certified Electrical Technologist with strong computer skills, a customer-focused and entrepreneurial mindset, and willingness to travel extensively while responding to urgent service needs.
