Job summary

Trans Mountain Corporation is seeking a Field Engineer-in-Training (Contract) in Burnaby, BC, to support the Field Engineering team with planning and execution of sustaining capital and operational work at the Westridge Marine Terminal.

The role builds practical field engineering capability through progressively assigned work, assisting with plans, scopes, and documentation, with no independent leadership of complex tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or another relevant engineering discipline.
  • Eligible for registration, or registered, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
  • Early-career engineering experience, including co-op, internship, field, plant, pipeline, terminal, or project experience, is an asset.
  • Interest in pipeline and facility engineering, brownfield work, sustaining capital projects, and supporting operations in an active operating environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and technical documents, with guidance as required.
  • A consistent track record of delivering high-quality work, managing competing priorities, and supporting key business processes or operational functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and levels across the organization.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, respectfully, and professionally.
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and a willingness to contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive workplace culture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Engineer with planning, scoping, coordination, and execution readiness for sustaining capital, major projects and operational work at Westridge Marine Terminal.
  • Support engineering activities associated with vapour recovery lines and related terminal piping systems, including gathering field information, confirming existing conditions, reviewing drawings, and assisting with work scope development.
  • Assist with the preparation of Engineered Job Plans (EJPs) for field execution activities, including line breaks, isolations, lockout, drain-down, purging, tie-ins, commissioning, and return-to-service activities.
  • Prepare draft EJP content, work plans, scope descriptions, marked-up drawings, checklists, and supporting technical documentation for review and approval by the Senior Engineer.
  • Participate in field walkdowns and job-site reviews to verify conditions, identify constraints, document interfaces, and support constructability and execution planning.
  • Support the development of isolation boundaries, depressurization and drain-down plans, and commissioning or start-up steps under the guidance of experienced engineering and operations personnel.
  • Assist sustaining capital and major project teams with scope definition, design reviews, field coordination, construction support, turnover, commissioning, and closeout activities.
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to Operations by researching technical information, reviewing records and drawings, documenting field issues, and helping develop practical solutions for review by the Senior Engineer.
  • Coordinate assigned activities with Operations, Projects, Integrity, Technical Services, contractors, and other stakeholders, while escalating technical questions, scope changes, and execution risks to the Senior Engineer.
  • Support Job Hazard Assessments, constructability reviews, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews, and other execution-readiness activities as assigned.
  • Assist with review of consultant and contractor deliverables for completeness, field applicability, and alignment with approved scope, with final technical review completed by the responsible Senior Engineer or Professional Engineer.
  • Maintain organized project and engineering records and incorporate lessons learned, field feedback, and approved changes into plans and job documentation.
  • Perform assigned engineering tasks in accordance with company standards, regulatory requirements, safe work practices, and the direction of supervising Senior Engineer.
  • Provide project engineering and management services including managing 3rd party engineering firms; project scoping; preparing AFE’s; drawing/design review, permitting, job hazard analysis, cost and schedule tracking, construction coordination, commissioning, and start-up support.
