If yes, the Alberta Medical Association is recruiting for the new position of Medical Billing Specialist (internal title for this role is Fees Specialist). In this role you will provide education and ongoing support to physicians and their billing team members with respect to appropriate use of the Alberta physician Schedule of Medical Benefits. As the ideal candidate you have a thorough and detailed knowledge of the SOMBs and the interrelationships contained within. You are a people person, with a strong customer service focus, who is able to tailor materials and complex information into clear, understandable terms for diverse audiences.

The AMA has a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of our Edmonton office and will have the opportunity to work from home but will be required to go into our Edmonton office, as well as occasionally travel throughout the province for seminars.

Position Overview

The Fees Specialist provides billing education, support and guidance to physicians, clinic billing staff and sections. This will include facilitation of individual and group training sessions both virtual and in-person.

Working in consultation with the Physician Compensation and Economics team, the incumbent is responsible for alerting sections to billing and payment issues, such as claims difficulties, inappropriate or inaccurate billing, and deficiencies in billing codes. Additionally, supports the development of solutions to address these issues within sections and, when necessary, with Alberta Health and other payors. This position regularly is required to work outside regular business hours and has occasional out-of-town travel (province wide) for seminars.

Key responsibility for this role includes, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supporting the develop of and facilitates virtual and in-person billing seminars related to the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB) and billing for uninsured services. This includes responding to ad hoc questions on various topics at time of seminars.
  • Providing billing support and guidance to physicians and clinic staff.
  • Advocating for physicians in matters relating to appropriate billing practices within a team environment.
  • Assisting physicians in understanding and responding to audit questions by Alberta Health within a team environment.
  • Collaborates with the Physician Compensation and Economics team in acting as an advocate and liaison for physicians in relation to unpaid claims by AH or the WCB.
  • Maintains an up‑to‑date knowledge of the SOMBS, Canada Health Act, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Regulations, the Workers’ Compensation Board Act and Regulations and the Schedule of Medical Benefits.

This position regularly is required to work outside regular business hours and has occasional out-of-town travel (province wide) for seminars.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, health administration, or related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in health-related field, with preference given to individuals with Alberta Health claims’ experience.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the Schedule of Medical Benefits.
  • Knowledge of various hybrid training tools and techniques is an asset.

Skills:

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proven organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing and concurrent priorities and tasks, within tight time frames.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to tailor materials and complex information into clear, understandable terms for diverse audiences.
  • Proficient facilitation skills to engage the audience and encourage active participation.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze problems, gather information and suggest options and/or solutions.
