Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE ) Faculty, Ironworker. Ironworkingincludes placing of reinforcing steel, erection of structural steel and other structural materials such as mass timber and precast concrete, structural welding, post tensioning, construction rigging, and the installation of miscellaneous, mechanical, and ornamental materials.

Successful candidates will be able to apply themselves and execute their responsibilities within apprentice and entry-level programs, part-time studies course, industry services courses, and other department initiatives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Classroom instruction and lesson preparation
  • Shop and lab instruction and supervision
  • Evaluation of learning and teaching
  • Administration of web and app based curriculum
  • Operation of tools and equipment and demonstration of that operation to students
  • Administrative responsibilities such as submitting marks, internal and external communications
  • Other duties as assigned by the department relating to instruction and curriculum
  • Development and maintenance of curriculum
  • Collaboration and teamwork with the department and Department Head

In addition to these duties, a person with the willingness to learn new concepts and address technical developments in their field is a must. The successful candidate will have the ability to motivate students to learn and commit themselves to excellence in instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • BC Certificate of Qualification with Inter-provincial Red Seal Status Ironworker or Ironworker (Generalist) with proof of completion of a formal Provincial Ironworker Apprenticeship program
  • Minimum of five years’ current experience as a Trade Qualified (TQ’d) Ironworker
  • The ideal candidate will have 2 – 5 years reinforcing experience
  • The ideal candidate will have 2 – 5 years structural experience
  • Welding experience and CWB certifications would be an asset
  • Mass Timber installation experience would be an asset
  • Miscellaneous, mechanical, and ornamental Ironworking experience would be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to instruct the curriculum
  • Previous supervisory, teaching or leadership experience
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Provincial Instructor Diploma (or willingness to achieve such) would be an asset
  • Must be knowledgeable and able to demonstrate all relevant safe work policies, procedures, guidelines, and industry best practices
  • Current computer literacy including, but not limited to; excel, word, outlook, cloud based file sharing, and the Learning Hub
