Job summary

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) seeks a Divisional Program Technician, Metal Trades to support students and faculty across trades programs at our Surrey campus and other BC locations.

The role involves monitoring shop activities, maintaining inventories, and assisting with tool repairs while upholding WHMIS and safety standards; forklift certification is required and strong English communication is essential.

Qualifications

  • Welding ticket or certification is required.
  • Ability to operate forklift/shop vehicles and possess forklift certification.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office (Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience monitoring student activity in a shop environment and ensuring safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to students and faculty in various trade programs, monitor shop work, maintain inventory, and prepare learning materials.
  • Ensure safety and proper handling of tools and equipment; address issues promptly.
  • Assist with repairs of tools and equipment and support faculty during lessons and labs.

We are currently seeking a Divisional Program Technician, Metal Trades to join our Faculty of Trades & Technology team.

Job Overview

To provide support and assistance to students and faculty in various trade programs including; monitoring shop work, maintaining inventory, repairs of tools and equipment and prepare materials for learning.

  • Priority consideration will be given to BCGEU employees currently impacted by layoff at the same or lower pay grade.
Education And Experience
  • A minimum of C Level Welding Ticket.
  • Ability to operate and maintain forklift/shop vehicles and have Forklift certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience in monitoring student activity in a shop environment, ensuring the safe handling of materials, tools and equipment.
  • Competence in the following software –MS Office. MS Excel, Outlook.
  • Extensive demonstrated experience with the safe use of machinery applicable to the trades.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WHMIS and WCB safe work procedures for the trades.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of machine tools.
  • Proven ability to organize work, multi-task and work to deadlines.
  • Proven ability to deal effectively with others and to handle unusual or unexpected situations, including the ability to deal with hostile or upset clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to display initiative, discretion and meet changing priorities; to tolerate ambiguity; to work on multiple tasks simultaneously; meet deadlines and make responsible decisions.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy items (23kg/50 pounds).
Job Description

As per the KPU-BCGEU Collective Agreement, qualified internal applicants within the BCGEU bargaining unit are given first consideration in filling this position. Salary Information

Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
