Job description

MS2S is searching for an Executive Director who can take the organization into its next chapter.

The ideal candidate will have experience in non-profit leadership, fundraising, partnerships, and ideally growing organizations with strong community support. The ED will report to the Governing Board of Directors and will lead and oversee all operations, including program development, staff management, financial sustainability, grant writing and fundraising, and board management.

Work environment and location:

  • Remote team - you’ll be working from home, with occasional in-person meetings, events and planning sessions
  • You will be based in the Howe Sound watershed or Vancouver

Compensation & hours:

  • $75,000–$91,000
  • 4-day work week
  • 32 hours per week
  • Ongoing contract
  • Flexible hours
  • 5 weeks of paid vacation - including 2 weeks of office closure (August + December)
  • 10 days paid sick leave
  • $2,000 annual work-from-home allowance
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the sound financial management of MS2S, including creating annual budgets, and working closely with the bookkeeper and treasurer to maintain financial records and monitor performance.
  • Create and execute a financial health plan for MS2S, including identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand and diversify MS2S funding for longer-term sustainability and establishing annual fundraising goals and deliverables.
  • Lead all donor relations, including cultivating positive relationships with foundation funders, monthly donors, one-off donors, and major donors.
  • Oversee grant applications, grant management, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure that appropriate financial systems and controls are in place to meet the needs of the organization and its funders. Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations related to fundraising.

Program Support & Strategic Planning

  • Develop and oversee the effective planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of MS2S’s operations, campaigns, and programs.
  • Work closely with the Campaigns & Communications Director to plan and implement new programs, campaigns, or initiatives to address emerging needs and opportunities as they relate to the organization’s mission and strategic plan.

Human Resources

  • Oversee staff management, development, training, and mentoring to ensure that the MS2S team are supported to achieve their full potential.
  • Lead a robust staff recruitment process.
  • Support volunteer engagement and retention, including attending volunteer trainings, events and identifying opportunities to deepen volunteer engagement.
  • Maintain a productive relationship with the MS2S Board of Directors.

Communications

  • Represent MS2S in social media and in print, radio, and television interviews, and public speaking engagements.
  • Ensure effective internal and external communications in line with the strategic plan.

Partnership & Government Relations

  • Engage with decision-makers and elected officials to advocate for MS2S campaign and policy priorities.
  • Engage with stakeholders to establish strategic partnerships and support the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives.
  • Actively participate in coalitions and networks as required.

Board Development & Support

  • Attend board meetings and provide regular updates on campaigns, programs and progress against the strategic plan.
  • Assist in the orientation and development of new Board Directors.
  • Support the Board to advance MS2S’s fundraising objectives.
Successful candidates will have
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (Environmental Studies, Communications, Non-Profit Management, Public Relations or a related field). A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Experience running campaigns, ideally in the environmental movement.
  • Experience working with a policy governance board.
  • Proven experience in grant writing and fundraising, preferably in the non-profit sector, is ideal.
  • Proven success in collaborative leadership and staff & volunteer management, particularly managing a remote team.
  • Experience developing and maintaining strong relationships with partner organizations.
  • Track record in strong fiscal management, fundraising, and donor engagement.
  • Experience working with First Nations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills, as well as outstanding written communication skills.|
  • High level of political and environmental acumen in BC and Canada.
  • Experience campaigning at a municipal, provincial, and federal level.
  • Experience in strategic litigation/legal cases (asset).
  • Background in marine conservation, environmental sustainability, public policy or a related field (asset).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team, demonstrating initiative, creativity and problem-solving skills.
