Job summary

Hatfield Consultants in Terrace, BC is seeking an Environmental Technician. This field position requires relocation to Terrace and involves over-time, shift-work, and regular out-of-town travel.

A valid Canadian driver’s license and vehicle are required. You will conduct field activities such as water quality monitoring, hydroacoustic data collection, and marine mammal observation; support project planning, permits, reporting, and client liaison; ensure environmental protection and regulatory

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of construction environmental monitoring experience.
  • Technical diploma or undergraduate degree, BC-qualified.
  • Experience with water quality monitoring, hydroacoustic data collection, and marine mammal observation.
  • Relevant professional designation (e.g., BIT/RPBio, RBTech, AAg, EPt).
  • Experience interpreting federal and provincial regulatory and permitting requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with large multidisciplinary heavy civil construction teams.
  • Ability to obtain permits and write weekly reports, EMPs, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with project planning and implementation, including health and safety, resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and client liaison.
  • Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation (weekly reports, EMPs, EPPs, etc.).
  • Work with project contractors and owners to identify environmental management and protection measures.
  • Issue stop-work orders and implement controls to protect the environment during non-compliance events.
  • Be a motivated, adaptable team player who can take ownership of tasks.

We are seeking an Environmental Technician

This is not a fly-in / fly-out position and requires relocation to Terrace BC. This is a field-position with over-time, shift-work and out-of-town travel expected on a regular basis. A vehicle is needed to travel to various sites.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct field activities including construction monitoring including water quality monitoring, hydroacoustic data collection and marine mammal observation.
  • Assist with project planning and implementation, including health and safety, resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and day-to-day client liaison.
  • Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare a range of environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation, such as weekly reports, EMPs, EPPs, and environmental work plans.
  • Work with project contractors and owners to identify and address environmental management and protection measures.
  • Comfortable issuing stop-work orders and independently implementing controls necessary to protect the environment during non-compliance events.
  • Motivated, adaptable team player willing to independently take ownership of specific tasks with self-driven ability to take initiative.
Education and Experience
  • A minimum of two years construction environmental monitoring experience.
  • Relevant technical diploma, undergraduate degree, or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in BC.
  • Experience with water quality monitoring, hydroacoustic data collection and marine mammal observation.
  • Relevant designation (e.g., BIT/RPBio, RBTech, AAg, EPt, etc.).
  • Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements associated with infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working successfully with large, multi-disciplinary heavy civil construction teams.
  • Experience in and working with a range of environmental disciplines (e.g., air quality, noise, surface and groundwater quality, soils, erosion and sediment control, vegetation, fish and fish habitat, contaminated sites, archaeology, Indigenous communities, etc.) is an asset.
Other Assets/Skills
  • A valid Canadian driver's license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance policy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to ensure project delivery and compliance through creative and adaptable solutions.
  • Capable of working and communicating with multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to obtain permits, licenses, and approvals from local, provincial, and federal authorities as well as ability to write weekly reports, EMPs, etc.
  • Understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, and guidance documents.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills and time management.
