Job summary

Hatfield seeks an Environmental Specialist to join the Infrastructure Environmental Monitoring group, working across Western Canada on fast-paced construction projects. You will manage teams, coordinate field surveys, and ensure regulatory compliance while supporting permits and environmental work plans.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years’ experience in infrastructure projects, strong multi-disciplinary collaboration, and a valid Canadian driver's license with vehicle access.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (fisheries, aquatics, ecology, environmental science/studies).
• 5+ years of experience managing environmental aspects of infrastructure development projects.
• Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements.
• Experience working in large, multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise teams of environmental technicians and specialists on infrastructure projects.
• Oversee resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality, and client liaison for projects.
• Coordinate field surveys and environmental data collection for design and implementation.
• Assist in obtaining environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies.
• Prepare EMPs, environmental protection plans, and work plans for projects.
• Collaborate with proponents, regulators, designers, and construction staff on environmental measures.
• Coordinate field activities, data collection, assessments, and reporting.
• Support business development by helping write proposals.

Position Summary

We are seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our Infrastructure Environmental Monitoring (IEM) group. You will work on fast‑paced, dynamic construction projects throughout Western Canada. Project assignments will cross several industry sectors (e.g., roads, bridges, highways, rapid transit, marine and coastal development, pipelines, municipal infrastructure, tunneling, renewable energy, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise teams of environmental technicians and specialists responsible for environmental management and monitoring on a range of infrastructure projects.
• Manage all aspects of project implementation, including resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and day‑to‑day client liaison.
• Manage required environmental field surveys in support of project design and implementation.
• Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies in support of infrastructure projects.
• Provide technical assistance in the preparation of a range of environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation, such as EMPs, environmental protection plans, and environmental work plans.
• Work with project development teams – including proponents, regulators, designers, and construction personnel – to address environmental management and protection measures during project planning and implementation.
• Coordinate and participate in field activities including data collection, environmental assessments, monitoring activities and reporting.
• Support business development opportunities, including the writing of proposals.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (fisheries, aquatics, ecology, environmental science/studies).
• 5+ years of experience managing environmental aspects of infrastructure development projects.
• Relevant professional certification (e.g., BIT/RPBio, RBTech, AAg, EPt, etc.) or ability to obtain is an asset.
• Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements associated with infrastructure development projects.
• Experience working in large, multi‑disciplinary teams is essential.
• Experience managing a range of environmental disciplines (air quality, noise, surface and groundwater quality, soils, vegetation, fish and fish habitat, contaminated sites).
• Access to a personal vehicle to drive to client sites.
• A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, and the ability to meet the requirements for our third‑party automobile insurance policy.

• Enthusiastic ability to work in the field for long hours in a variety of weather conditions.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills to ensure project delivery and compliance through creative and adaptable solutions.
• Capable of working and communicating with multi‑disciplinary project teams.
• Ability to obtain permits, licenses, and approvals from local, provincial, and federal authorities as well as ability to write weekly reports, EMPs, etc.
• Understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, and guidance documents.
• Demonstrated aptitude for project management and coordination, and excellent organization and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to support business development opportunities, including writing proposals and marketing materials.

Salary

$77k – $118k. We extend an invitation to applicants of all levels to submit their candidacy for this role.
