Job summary

Hatfield Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist for the Infrastructure Environmental Monitoring group. You will lead environmental teams on Western Canada infrastructure projects, coordinating field surveys, permits, and reporting.

Hybrid work is offered with emphasis on field collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams. The role requires 5+ years' experience, an environmental degree, and relevant certifications; valid driving license and drug/alcohol screening are required for

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in an environmental discipline.
  • 5+ years managing environmental aspects of infrastructure projects.
  • Certifications (BIT/RPBio, RBTech, AAg, EPt) or eligible asset.
  • Experience with federal and provincial regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading large, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to drive to client sites and hold a valid Canadian license.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol screening for safety-sensitive sites.

  • Supervise environmental technicians and specialists on infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, and client liaison.
  • Conduct environmental field surveys to support design and implementation.
  • Assist in obtaining environmental permits and approvals.
  • Prepare EMPs and environmental work plans for project approval.
  • Coordinate with project teams to address environmental measures.
  • Lead field activities, data collection, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Contribute to proposals and business development.

We are seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our Infrastructure Environmental Monitoring (IEM) group. You will work on fast-paced, dynamic, construction projects throughout Western Canada. Project assignments will cross several industry sectors (e.g., roads, bridges, highways, rapid transit, marine and coastal development, pipelines, municipal infrastructure, tunneling, renewable energy, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Manage and supervise teams of environmental technicians and specialists responsible for environmental management and monitoring on a range of infrastructure projects.
  • Manage all aspects of project implementation, including resourcing, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, quality management, and day-to-day client liaison.
  • Manage required environmental field surveys in support of project design and implementation.
  • Provide technical assistance for acquiring environmental permits, licenses, and approvals from regulatory agencies in support of infrastructure projects.
  • Provide technical assistance in the preparation of a range of environmental compliance documents required for project approval and implementation, such as EMPs, environmental protection plans, and environmental work plans.
  • Work with project development teams – including proponents, regulators, designers, and construction personnel – to address environmental management and protection measures during project planning and implementation.
  • Coordinate and participate in field activities including data collection, environmental assessments, monitoring activities and reporting.
  • Supporting business development opportunities, including the writing of proposals.
Education and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (fisheries, aquatics, ecology, environmental science/studies).
  • 5+ years of experience managing environmental aspects of infrastructure development projects.
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., BIT/RPBio, RBTech, AAg, EPt, etc.) or ability to obtain is an asset.
  • Experience interpreting and working with federal and provincial environmental regulatory and permitting requirements associated with infrastructure development projects.
  • Experience working in large, multi-disciplinary teams is essential.
  • Experience managing a range of environmental disciplines (air quality, noise, surface and groundwater quality, soils, vegetation, fish and fish habitat, contaminated sites).
  • Access to a personal vehicle to drive to client sites.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, and the ability to meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance policy.
  • As a condition of employment, our field technical staff who are required to work for our clients on safety-sensitive sites will need to successfully pass drug and alcohol screening during their employment.

  • Ability to obtain permits, licenses, and approvals from local, provincial, and federal authorities as well as ability to write weekly reports, EMPs, etc.
  • Understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, and guidance documents.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for project management and coordination, and excellent organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to support business development opportunities, including writing proposals and marketing materials.
