Job summary

Hatfield seeks a Marine Technician to support environmental surveys across marine ecosystems, including fish habitat and water quality. The role is based in North Vancouver with travel throughout Western Canada.

You will work under seasoned environmental professionals and contribute to ongoing coastal restoration projects. The ideal candidate has a marine biology/ecology background, 1+ years of relevant experience, and strong written communication and data skills.

• Completed BSc or BA in marine biology or ecology, or equivalent with BC qualifications.
• 1+ years of relevant work experience.
• Experience in scientific writing and data collection.
• Valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years.

Responsibilities

• Participate in environmental surveys and monitoring focusing on marine ecology and water quality.
• Work as Environmental Monitor on marine construction projects.
• Assist in data collection, entry, quality control, and report preparation.
• Prepare permit applications and related documentation.
• Review literature and data; communicate findings to peers.
• Engage with marine and management teams on projects.

The Marine Technician role presents a tremendous career growth opportunity to play a key role in the ongoing development of our team and will receive excellent mentorship from experienced environmental professionals. The ideal candidate will have a marine ecology or biology background. Project assignments will cross several industry sectors (e.g., marine and coastal restoration and development, infrastructure, tunnelling, renewable energy, ports and terminals, etc.). This position will be based out of Hatfield's North Vancouver office and may require travel throughout Western Canada.

Responsibilities

• Participation in environmental surveys and monitoring studies, focusing on marine ecology, fish and fish habitat (e.g., saltmarsh, eelgrass, kelp), water and sediment quality, benthic invertebrate communities or other related elements of the marine environment.
• Working as an Environmental Monitor, typically on marine related construction projects.
• Assist in data collection, entry, quality control, analysis, and interpretation for report preparation.
• Preparation of permit applications and associated documentation.
• Literature and data review, collation, and communication of review/research to peers.
• Engage with marine and management teams on a variety of projects.

Education And Experience

• Completed BSc or BA in marine biology or ecology, or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in BC.
• 1+ years of relevant work experience.
• Experience in scientific writing, scientific data collection and relevant field techniques.
• Training or courses relating to data analysis, environmental assessments and permitting in BC.
• A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for our third party automobile insurance policy.
• Relevant professional certification (e.g., RBTech/BiT/RPBio, AAg/PAg, EPt/EP, etc.) or ability to obtain is an asset.

• Ability to work within diverse teams and maintain a positive attitude.
• Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including potentially working in remote locations.
• Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to potentially work additional or non-standard hours.
• Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills and time management.
• Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of adherence to standard operating procedures and data collection, management, and analysis standards.
• A focus on health, safety and quality.
• An understanding of environmental legislation, regulations, permitting processes, guidance documents and Best Management Practices in BC.
• Other experience or interests that would be an asset include:
  • strong identification skills of BC marine flora and fauna;
  • boat driving experience (on rivers and ocean), particularly around southern BC;
  • SVOP, MED A3 (or equivalent), ROC-M, Marine Basic First Aid;
  • experience trailering a boat;
  • CAUS or occupational SCUBA (or ability to easily obtain) and scientific diving experience;
  • construction environmental monitoring;
  • hydroacoustic monitoring;
  • marine mammal monitoring;
  • marine fish and fish habitat assessments;
  • marine invertebrate assessments;
  • sediment and water quality sampling; and
  • environmental effects monitoring and reporting.
