Job summary

City of Kamloops seeks a temporary, full-time Environmental Technician to work in the field, helping keep landfill and composting operations compliant, safe, and eco-friendly.

You will monitor groundwater, assist with landfill gas systems, and respond to environmental incidents while supporting broader sustainability initiatives. The role requires a degree in environmental science or related field and at least six months of data experience, plus a valid BC Class 5 license.

  • Minimum six months of experience with collection, maintenance, and manipulation of environmental data.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel; basic PowerPoint; tested with a 70% pass rate.
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 5.

The successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree such as environmental science, natural resource science, or courses with a focus on environmental management or other related discipline(s).
  • Minimum of six months’ previous professional experience related to the collection, maintenance, and manipulation of environmental data.
  • Proficient in intermediate Word, intermediate Excel, and basic PowerPoint, as demonstrated through testing (70% pass rate required).
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 5.

Please note, there are two (2) temporary positions available. The first positions end date will be approximately November 27, 2027 or return of incumbent, the other positions end date will be approximately May 2028 or return of incumbent. The senior candidate will have their choice of end date.

For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes a police information check.

This is a unionized position with CUPE Local 900; check out our Collective Agreement (2024 - 2025) for full details (ratified 2026 Collective Agreement coming soon). As this is a unionized position, all qualifications must be met in order to be shortlisted for the position.

Hours & Days of Work

Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM and 7:00 Am – 4:00 PMThis position is being hired under a modified schedule with an extra day off every third week.
