Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) seeks a Director-level Environmental Science & Policy Manager to lead environmental programs across the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. You will guide research, policy development, climate adaptation, clean energy, marine systems and biodiversity initiatives, translating science into actionable policy and program decisions.

Reporting to the Director of Innovation, Science and Climate Change, you will oversee staff and partnerships, secure funding, and advance

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental or related field required.
  • PhD strongly preferred in environmental science, ecology, marine science, climate science, natural resources, biology, environmental engineering, or related discipline.
  • PMI designation or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience.
  • Experience designing, managing, and overseeing scientific research, monitoring, and technical programs.
  • Budget management, forecasting, funder reporting and proposals.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience of scientific/technical staff.
  • Experience with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Ability to translate scientific findings into policy and strategy.

Responsibilities

ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)

Established in 1984 to manage the settlement outlined in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA), Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) represents the collective interests of Inuvialuit. IRC’s goal is to continually improve the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the Inuvialuit through implementation of the IFA and by all other available means. Through strong partnerships and community-driven programs, the organization supports economic growth, cultural preservation and opportunities for current and future generations.

Inuvialuit beneficiaries directly control IRC and its subsidiaries through a democratic process of elected directors from each of the six community corporations with chairs at the IRC Board, a process originally outlined in the IFA.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Innovation, Science and Climate Change, the Environmental Science & Policy Manager provides strategic, scientific, policy, and operational leadership for IRC's environmental programs and initiatives across the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

The position leads environmental research, policy development, climate change adaptation, clean energy, marine systems, biodiversity, nature conservation, and environmental stewardship initiatives. Responsible for translating scientific evidence into practical policies, programs, and decision-making, the Manager oversees environmental research projects, scientific infrastructure, laboratory operations, technical staff, and partnerships.

The role also secures funding, develops and implements environmental strategies and policies, supports knowledge mobilization, strengthens Inuvialuit participation in STEM and environmental sciences, and ensures IRC remains actively engaged in environmental governance, advocacy, and regional planning to improve the well-being of Inuvialuit communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have:

  • At least a Master’s degree in environmental or related field.
    • PhD degree in environmental science, ecology, marine science, climate science, natural resources, biology, environmental engineering, or another relevant scientific discipline strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience (PMI designation preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in environmental science, research, monitoring, natural resources, or a related scientific/technical field.
  • Experience designing, managing, and overseeing scientific research, monitoring, and technical programs.
  • Experience managing research and program budgets, financial planning, forecasting, funder reporting, and funding proposals.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience, including oversight of scientific, technical, laboratory, or research personnel.
  • Experience operating or overseeing a scientific laboratory, research facility, field program, or comparable technical environment.
  • Experience developing policy documents, action plans, and reports for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Strong ability to evaluate scientific literature, technical reports, and environmental data and translate findings into policy, strategy, programming, and operational recommendations.
  • Experience developing and managing partnerships with universities, governments, Indigenous organizations, industry, laboratories, and other research institutions.

Screened in candidates will be assessed later on the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region;
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with computers (e.g., Microsoft Suite, InDesign etc.);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong networking skills;
  • Highly motivated, analytical, dependable, independent with a strong work ethic;
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Reliable and willing to work with minimum supervision;
  • Must be willing to travel, particularly within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Adverse weather conditions may be encountered at different times during the year.
  • The Incumbent must be flexible and creative in finding solutions to issues that arise.
