Job summary

National Gypsum Company seeks an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator to lead safety initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance across quarry and dock operations. You will support development and continuous improvement of EHS programs in collaboration with operations, maintenance, contractors and leadership teams.

The role ensures compliance with company standards and federal and Nova Scotia environmental and occupational health & safety legislation, including the Environment Act.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years EHS experience in manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of Nova Scotia OH&S Act and Environment Act.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support and enforce Environmental, Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate safety training for employees, contractors, visitors, and temporary staff.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Establish and maintain site First Aid/CPR/ERT.
  • Assist with contractor safety orientation and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with environmental inspections, monitoring, and water sampling programs.

Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator

Reports To: Plant Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator provides leadership and technical support to promote a strong safety culture and ensure environmental and regulatory compliance across quarry and dock operations. This role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS programs while working closely with operations, maintenance, contractors, and leadership teams.

The EHS Coordinator serves as a key resource to ensure compliance with company standards as well as federal and Nova Scotia environmental and occupational health & safety legislation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health & Safety Leadership
  • Support and enforce company Environmental, Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and implement changes to applicable EHS legislation, regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate safety training programs to ensure compliance for employees, contractors, visitors, and temporary staff.
  • Lead and support incident and near‑miss investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking.
  • Establish and maintain a site First Aid / CPR / Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Administer contractor safety orientation and compliance requirements.
  • Support compliance with the Nova Scotia Environment Act and applicable permits.
  • Manage environmental inspections, monitoring activities, and water sampling programs.
  • Lead sustainability initiatives and coordinate data collection and reporting.
  • Support spill prevention, response planning, and environmental emergency preparedness.
Audits, Inspections & Committees
  • Manage site EHS inspection programs covering facilities, equipment, machinery, and work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate EHS audit standards; support internal and external audits.
  • Lead the site Joint Occupational Health & Safety / Safety Committee and ensure active participation and follow‑up.
  • Monitor corporate safety alerts and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Training & Development
  • Deliver or coordinate monthly EHS training, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Support the development of safe work procedures and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
  • Provide coaching and development opportunities in EHS leadership and awareness.
Administration & Reporting
  • Manage procurement of safety equipment and supplies (PPE, first aid, rescue equipment).
  • Administer purchase orders, invoice approvals, and budget tracking for the EHS department.
  • Prepare monthly site reports and quarterly corporate EHS and expense reports.
  • Monitor CAT Driver Safety Systems for fatigue and sleep alerts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Environmental, Health & Safety or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years EHS experience in manufacturing or industrial industries.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act and Environment Act.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and be available for off‑shift or on‑call support as required.
Preferred
  • Holds a current safety designation/certification or is working towards it.
  • Current First Aid / CPR / AED certification.
  • Experience in quarry, mining, marine, or dock operations.
