Job summary

Windsor Salt in Pugwash, NS is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator to lead site health, safety and environmental programs on-site. You will develop, implement and improve policies, guide managers and employees, and ensure regulatory compliance across safety, industrial hygiene and environmental aspects.

You will perform inspections, training, audits and incident investigations, track key performance indicators, and coordinate corrective actions.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and improve site-specific health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental, security programs in accordance with regulatory and corporate requirements
• Provide guidance to Managers and employees on H&S or environmental issues
• Identify and evaluate H&S or environmental risks and implement control measures
• Coach and mentor staff on safe work practices and behaviours
• Ensure H&S and environmental training is developed and completed per training plan
• Perform inspections, audits, drills, and self-assessments to ensure regulatory compliance
• Track and report site-specific H&S and environmental KPIs to management
• Coordinate incident investigations and drive corrective actions including risk assessments
• Manage workplace injury/illness claims and return-to-work processes
• Conduct industrial hygiene assessments and monitoring per monitoring plan
• Validate fire safety programs and alarms are functional
• Act as the primary contact for regulators under management guidance
• Monitor injuries, near misses, safety observations, and property damage
• Stay current on regulations and emerging issues
• Submit required regulatory reports
• Ensure environmental inspections are completed and documented
• Manage disposal of waste and sustainability projects

Duties & Responsibilities

The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

• Assisting with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of site-specific health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental, security programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements
• Providing guidance and support to Managers and employees regarding H&S or environmental issues
• Identifying and evaluating H&S or environmental risks and ensuring proper risk reduction and control measures are implemented
• Coaching and mentoring management and employees on safe work practices and behaviours
• Ensuring effective H&S and environmental training is developed and completed according to the training plan
• Performing inspections, audits, drills and self-assessments to ensure and validate compliance with all regulatory and company requirements
• Measuring, monitoring and reporting site specific H&S and environmental related key performance indicators to management and corporate, as required
• Ensuring timely and effective completion of corrective and preventative action plansCoordinating the timely investigation of all H&S and environmental related incidents and ensuring proper escalation, root cause analysis, and completion of suitable corrective actions including risk assessments, job hazard analyses, and site inspections
• Completing workplace injury and illness claims (WCB/WSIB) and support all return-to-work and disability management processes.
• Completing Industrial Hygiene assessments and monitoring in accordance with the annual monitoring plan
• Validating a fire safety program is in place and ensure proper functionality of sprinkler systems and alarms
• Under the guidance of management, acting as the primary contact for external H&S and environmental related regulators
• Tracking and trending injuries, near miss events, safety observations and property damage incidents
• Staying current on government regulations and emerging issues and trends
• Completing and submitting all required regulatory reports
• Ensuring all environmental inspections and reviews are completed as scheduled and are properly documented
• Manages disposal of regulated and non-regulated waste to ensure compliance
• Works with facility personnel to identify and implement sustainability projects to meet company objectives

• Ability to demonstrate a through and comprehensive understanding of relevant standards
• Creative thinking skills with the ability to balance multiple projects and tasks
• Possesses basic knowledge of technical information regarding relevant H&S elements
• Flexible in working during non-business hours to meet business needs

Preferred Skills

• Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Program
• Trained in Transportation of Dangerous Goods
• Certified as a Class II Wastewater Treatment Plant operator in Nova Scotia - preferred
• Responds to urgent or emergency situations outside or or during normal working hours, as needed
• Works in general office and surface/underground production environment
• Works around powered equipment and location requiring access via stairs and/or ladders
