Position Summary
The Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Advisor role exists to provide support and guidance to all of our facilities and field activities as it relates to all aspects of creating a safe workplace. The role is to incorporate a hands-on approach to the elimination & mitigation of safety risk, assess site safety performance, drive safety accountability and develop a strong, positive, site safety culture.
This position is open to candidates located anywhere in British Columbia. Frequent travel primarily within the Lower Mainland and across the Province will be required.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensure quality delivery of GFL’s EH&S program by guiding and mentoring operations, managers, and supervisors to increase safety and environmental awareness and improve EH&S practices of day-to-day operations.
- Support the development and implementation of GFL’s EH&S initiatives, programs, policies, and procedures while ensuring compliance with relevant employment and occupational health and safety legislation.
- Conduct audits under the corporate risk management program.
- Assist with internal and external COR certification audits (BC, other western provinces considered an asset).
- Coordinate environmental monitoring and emergency exercise events.
- Participate in incident investigations, conduct root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
- Identify and control safety hazards and environmental risks through established programs.
- Ensure regional branches conduct required Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings and other legislated programs.
- Stay updated on health & safety regulations and maintain relationships with regional regulatory personnel.
- Maintain effective relationships with regional stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
- Coordinate involvement with regional and corporate initiatives.
- Provide quality service in accordance with company and regulatory standards, understanding customer requirements.
- Collaborate with other regional and corporate staff to enhance risk management systems.
- Coach and reinforce safety practices with operations management to ensure employee training in safe and environmentally sound work practices.
Education And Qualifications
- A related degree, diploma, or professional designation is preferred.
- At least 5 years of progressive experience in the EH&S field is preferred.
- Experience in industrial, waste disposal, trucking, or manufacturing environments is a strong asset.
- COR Auditing Certificate (Western Provinces) is an asset.
- Experience with Enablon and/or WorkHub is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and own transportation for local travel.
- Ability to travel within western Canada and fly as needed for extended periods.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Strong communication skills to convey safety policies clearly to all employee levels.
- Experience designing and delivering large-scale safety and environmental programs.
- Proficiency in office software programs.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for safety and environmental challenges.
- Ability to work effectively across departments to embed EH&S practices.
- Familiarity with safety management software and databases.
- Adaptability to a fast-paced, changing environment.
