Overview
The Environmental Manager will be responsible to implement, manage and monitor the environmental programs for a 24/7 operation facility while working with internal and external stakeholders. To be effective, this individual must demonstrate the ability to lead and influence staff, not under direct supervision . The ideal candidate will take the initiative to solve complex challenges and have a strong ability to think laterally in delivering project solutions.
Detailed Roles & Responsibilities
- Manages the ongoing compliance requirements for the facility. Secures and maintains appropriate permits for all media and ensures appropriate waste management methods.
- Prepares and manages compliance reporting for the facility, including but not limited to: NPRI, TRA, GHG, Blue Box, annual permit reporting, GHG verification.
- Provides technical review and risk assessment for proposed new projects and significant operational changes and ensures appropriate regulatory approvals are secured
- As a part of the facility leadership team, works to build a genuine culture of Environmental awareness and responsibility toward environmental compliance at the site.
- Stays current on community development and regulatory changes to protect company interests through implementation of agreements, measures and/or solutions that ensure our continued ability to operate and maintain compliance with our site environmental permits.
- Provides the facility leadership team with clear guidance on strategies for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations in accordance with federal, provincial, and local guidelines and regulations
- Responds to on-site emergencies and incidents and acts as incident command in conjunction with Health and Safety and Security functions.
- Plans and forecasts for the annual Environmental Budget and manages expenditure.
- Prepares and submits incident and near-miss reports, participates in, or leads investigations to identify root cause and determine solutions.
- Walks the site on a regular basis to establish environmental presence and provide support.
- Prepare routine correspondence, data reports, standardized documents, and work plans for internal and external reviews.
- Manage projects, complete fieldwork and write summary reports as needed.
- Point of contact for regulatory audits, visits or inspections.
- Perform a variety of duties for various assessments / projects within the Toronto Refinery including management, investigation, remediation and monitoring of environmental projects
- Retrieve, process and manage delivery of compliance-based samples when needed.
- Prepare routine correspondence, data reports, standardized documents and work plans for internal and external reviews.
- Develops and maintains relationships with Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governmental Agencies, community associations, legal teams, consultants and developers.
- Lead environmental training and employee environmental engagement efforts for the site
- Perform and/or lead required internal environmental audits/inspections
- Performs other duties and assigned.
Position Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment is mandatory
- Minimum 4-5 years of experience in delivering environmental compliance including permitting and waste management
- Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Environmental, Chemical Engineering or Environmental Technologist degree.
- Knowledge of federal, province and local regulations
- Candidate must have excellent verbal communications and technical writing skills.
- Professional Engineer of Ontario designation a plus
