OVERVIEW:

The Environmental Manager will be responsible for implementing, managing, and monitoring the environmental programs for a 24/7 operation facility while working with internal and external stakeholders. To be effective, this individual must demonstrate the ability to lead and influence staff without direct supervision. The ideal candidate will take the initiative to solve complex challenges and have a strong ability to think laterally in delivering project solutions.

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage ongoing compliance requirements for the facility, securing and maintaining appropriate permits for all media and ensuring proper waste management methods.
  • Prepare and manage compliance reporting for the facility, including NPRI, TRA, GHG, Blue Box, annual permit reporting, and GHG verification.
  • Provide technical review and risk assessment for proposed new projects and significant operational changes, ensuring appropriate regulatory approvals are secured.
  • Contribute to building a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility towards compliance at the site as part of the leadership team.
  • Stay current on community development and regulatory changes to protect company interests through implementation of measures that ensure compliance with environmental permits.
  • Guide the facility leadership team on strategies to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local environmental regulations.
  • Respond to on-site emergencies and incidents, acting as incident command alongside Health and Safety and Security functions.
  • Plan and forecast the annual environmental budget and manage expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit incident and near-miss reports, leading investigations to identify root causes and solutions.
  • Conduct regular site walks to establish environmental presence and provide support.
  • Prepare routine correspondence, data reports, standardized documents, and work plans for reviews.
  • Manage projects, perform fieldwork, and write summary reports as needed.
  • Serve as the point of contact for regulatory audits, visits, or inspections.
  • Perform various assessments and environmental projects within the Toronto Refinery, including management, investigation, remediation, and monitoring.
  • Retrieve, process, and manage delivery of compliance samples when needed.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with federal, provincial, and municipal agencies, community associations, legal teams, consultants, and developers.
  • Lead environmental training and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Perform and/or lead internal environmental audits and inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment is mandatory.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in environmental compliance, including permitting and waste management.
  • B.S. Degree in Environmental, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Technologist.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, and local regulations.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Professional Engineer of Ontario designation is a plus.
