Job summary

Pack-Smart Inc. Automation, headquartered in Concord, Ontario, is seeking an Engineering Manager (Mechanical Design) to lead a high-performance team of up to 12 engineers. You will own the mechanical design function, drive design reviews, and ensure delivery commitments for production-speed equipment.

Expect growth in leadership, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration across automation projects. You will mentor engineers, manage project timelines, and promote best practices in CAD, GD&T,

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience as a mechanical designer in automation, robotics, packaging machinery, or custom machine building.
• Strong leadership ability with either informal or formal team-leading experience.
• Strong practical command of CAD (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, pneumatics, servo systems, and mechanical fundamentals.
• Proven ability to manage timelines, coordinate teams, and solve cross-functional challenges.
• A track record of owning difficult engineering problems and demonstrating that your solutions worked.
• Experience developing engineers through technical leadership, coaching, and feedback.
• The ability to manage competing priorities across engineering and manufacturing.
• A strong ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly and apply feedback.
• Experience with Lean manufacturing, structured document control, or engineering process improvement is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead design reviews grounded in calculations, mechanical fundamentals, and test evidence.
• Coach engineers through focused practice, feedback, and follow-up; build technical depth.
• Plan capacity across multiple automation projects and coordinate resources.
• Challenge requirements and reduce unnecessary complexity in CAD modeling, GD&T, and drawings.
• Turn proven designs into modular systems with documented standards and guidance.
• Own engineering changes and ensure changes reach purchasing, manufacturing, and assembly.
• Create an environment where engineers question designs and establish corrective actions.

Engineering Manager (Mechanical Design) —Lead, Develop, and Elevate a High-Performance Design Team

You will own the mechanical designfunction and a team of up to 12 engineers. Your mandate has three parts:

• Equipment that performs at productionspeed,
• Engineers who keep solving harderproblems, and
• Delivery commitments the shop floor cantrust.

You bring engineering disciplineand resilience to complex problems. When a mechanism must perform at productionspeed, you go back to first principles, solve the underlying engineeringchallenge, and deliver a solution that performs with precision and reliability.

You find the constraint, test theassumptions, fix the cause, and verify the result.

You move quickly, make yourreasoning clear, and change direction when the evidence demands it. You holdyourself to the standard you set for others.

What YOU will own:

• Equipmentthat performs -Lead design reviews grounded in calculations, mechanical fundamentals, and testevidence.
• Engineerswho solve complex problems -Coach through focused practice, specific feedback, and follow-up. Buildtechnical depth and independence across the team.

• Changesunder control -Own engineering change requests and orders. Maintain revision control andensure approved changes reach purchasing, manufacturing, and assembly.
• Problemsraised early and resolved -Create an environment where engineers question designs, expose weakassumptions, and report mistakes. Establish corrective actions and verify thatthey work.
• Recruitment,onboarding, performance reviews, and career development for your team. Helpnew engineers contribute sooner. Give strong performers technical challenges and thecoaching to master them.

What YOU bring:

• 7+ years of experience asa mechanical designer in automation, robotics, packaging machinery, orcustom machine building.
