Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a HAZMAT Technician to deliver high-level technical expertise during emergency activations involving dangerous goods. The role supports 24/7 response with a focus on safety, planning, and timely action.

You will coordinate resources, maintain equipment, and lead safety during incidents to uphold our service standards. Requirements include on-call capability, experience in hazmat emergency response, and the ability to travel regionally with overnight stays.

Qualifications

• Experience in hazardous materials emergency response.
• Physically fit for protective clothing and respirators.
• Clean driving record; Class 5 required; Class 1 or 3 beneficial.
• Willing to travel across the regional area, including overnight stays.
• Extensive training will be provided by GFL.

Responsibilities

• Respond at a moment’s notice to spills via rail, road or fixed facilities.
• Perform chemical transloading between containment systems.
• Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
• Organize resources for response and preparedness, including personnel, equipment and documentation.
• Ensure emergency response equipment is operable and maintained.
• Gather and maintain information and documentation for emergency services.
• Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response and follow procedures.
• Set up and participate in live training events to ensure competency.
• Participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.

Job description

Summary: As a key member of GFL’s HAZMAT Emergency Response Team, the HAZMAT Technician will provide a high level of technical expertise to emergency activations involving dangerous goods. The Technician will supplement our current team to ensure immediate response is provided to all emergency response calls, 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. The person will be able to complete responses in an efficient manner while upholding GFL’s high standards of safety and quality of service. The position requires exceptional skills in safety, planning, communication, organizing and time management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Respond at a moment’s notice to spills including responding to rail, road, and fixed facilities.
• Perform chemical transloading from one means of containment to another. May include tankcars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, or other small means of containment.
• Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
• Assist with organizing all resources required in both an response situations and in preparation for potential response situations, including personnel, equipment and documentation
• Ensure all emergency response equipment is operationally ready including maintaining, upgrading and servicing our ER equipment and customer’s equipment.
• Ensure all relevant information and documentation is gathered and maintained when providing emergency services
• Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including following GFL procedures, completing safety documentation, and upholding GFL’s high level of safety.
• Set up and participate in live training events to ensure competency of personnel
• Participate in specialized scheduled projects as required

Requirements:

• Ability to fulfill on-call requirements
• Experience in a position relating to hazardous materials emergency response
• Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection from as required.
• Class 5 driver’s license with clean abstract required, Class 1 or 3 would be very beneficial

• Mandatory travel across the regional area, including overnight stays. Travel frequency depends on emergency response and specialized project demands.
• Understanding of vacuum truck and power wash equipment
• Team driven and safety focused
• Advanced training including but not limited to: HAZMAT Technician, Tankcar Specialist, Tanktruck Specialist, I​CS, Confined Space Entry, etc.
• Please note extensive training will be provided by GFL to a successful candidate.
