Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. seeks an EH&S Advisor to advance a safe, compliant, and healthy work environment through field-based collaboration with front-line supervisors and employees.

The role requires frequent travel (70%) and close work with operations to embed safety in daily activities. You will support EHS programs, training, onboarding, reporting, and regulatory compliance, with emphasis on COR, ISO 45001, SEMS-Enablon, and customer programs.

Qualifications

• 3-5+ years of experience in an on-site Environmental Health & Safety role, with industry exposure preferred (Waste Management/Transportation/Construction).
• Degree, Diploma or Professional Certification in H&S or related field preferred.
• A team player who can adapt to change and train others.

Responsibilities

• Supports day-to-day administration activities of EHS on all operations matters.
• Formulates improvements to EHS programs.
• Ensures compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations.
• Manages EHS programs and related training & development initiatives.
• Conduct onboarding/orientations for new hires and integrate safety into daily operations.
• Prepare reports and project updates on EHS performance.
• Attend client/project meetings and interface with regulatory officials.

Job description

The EH&S Advisor will be committed to developing a healthy and safe work environment for all our team members through hands-on, field-based collaboration with front-line supervisors and employees. With the support of a national team, you will be relied upon to bring support and guidance in the health and safety field, allowing you to advise on various unique obstacles that we face on a day-to-day basis. Working closely with our operational team, the Safety Advisor will ensure that safety is at the top of the mind for all team members and at the forefront of all daily activities. Frequent travel (70%) will be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Supports the day-to-day administration activities of GFL operations on all EHS matters
• Formulates improvement to EHS program
• Ensures compliance to the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Construction & Industrial Regulations and other pertinent legislation
• Ensures compliance for all customer programs such as ISN Networld, Avetta, and Contractor Check
• Manages and supports all EHS programs; COR, ISO 450001, SEMS-Enablon, the GFL LMS, Subcontractor Management and Return to Work
• Manages & supports training & development programs
• Conduct Onboarding/Orientations for new hires
• Streamlining communication within EHS & Operations
• Assist EHS Manager and Director in company pursuits with marketing strategies, prequalifications, bids and proposals, related to health & safety
• Interface with the public through projects imbedded within the community, Regulatory officials, Safe Work Associations & Suppliers/Vendors
• Attend client/project meetings where required
• Prepare reports and project updates as it relates to the EHS performance
• Other duties as prescribed by the Senior Manager

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

• 3-5+ years of experience within a similar on-site Environmental Health & Safety role, with previous experience within Waste Management, Transportation or Construction industry preferred
• Degree, Diploma or Professional Certification in H&S or related field of study preferred
• A team player that accepts and can manage change regularly
• Train the trainer in some of the required field level training (Fire Extinguisher, Confined Space etc.)
• Time management skills

• Vehicle and valid license required
• 75% travel required
