Job summary

Dalhousie University, located in Halifax with an agricultural campus in Truro, seeks an experienced electrician to perform electrical work across campus facilities. The role requires hands-on installation, maintenance and safety compliance in a university setting.

The successful candidate will install data wiring, fire alarm systems, and electrical conduits while following Canadian Electrical Code and OHSA.

Qualifications

  • Valid Construction Electrician certificate required; Red Seal designation an asset.
  • Completion of certified trades school program preferred.
  • Five years journeyperson experience in commercial/institutional settings up to 600 VAC.
  • Communication Cabling Specialist certification an asset.
  • Experience with addressable and non-addressable fire alarm systems an asset.
  • Knowledge of Nova Scotia OHSA and Canadian Electrical Code; follow university rules.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and equipment specs.
  • Ability to take direction; reliable and punctual.
  • Good communication and organizational skills; willing to overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs and maintains electrical devices including motors, panels and VFDs.
  • Installs low voltage and data wiring.
  • Installs and maintains fire alarm systems.
  • Bends, assembles and installs conduits and electrical enclosures.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on designated electrical equipment.
  • Makes recommendations for upgrades based on economical/professional judgement.
  • Complies with Nova Scotia OHSA, Canadian Electrical Code, and university rules.
  • Maintains a clean work environment.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job Summary

The incumbent is responsible to perform electrical related work on campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Installs, repairs and maintains electrical devices such as but not limited to motors, motor controls, panels, branch circuits and variable speed drives
  • Installs low voltage and data wiring
  • Installs and maintains fire alarm systems
  • Bends, assembles and installs conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on designated electrical equipment
  • Makes recommendations for upgrading electrical systems based on best economical/professional judgement
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act, Canadian Electrical Code, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Maintains a clean work environment
  • Performs other duties as required
Note

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and equipment specifications

  • Must be willing and able to work overtime and respond to after-hours calls as required

  • Familiarity with microcomputers preferred

  • General safety, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Lock Out / Tag Out, Arc Flash and WHMIS training an asset
