Job summary

Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, is seeking an experienced Carpenter to perform maintenance and renovations on campus facilities. Reporting to the Trade Supervisor and/or Manager, you will install floors, walls, ceilings, cabinetry and millwork, and work from scaffolding and lifts.

The role requires a valid Carpenter certificate of qualification in Nova Scotia, 5 years of journey-person experience, and the ability to read blueprints. Overtime and on-call duties may be required.

Qualifications

  • Valid Carpenter certificate of qualification recognised by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration.
  • Five years recent and related journeyman experience in construction or maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings/blueprints.
  • Direct others in foreperson capacity when required.
  • Ability to work at heights and operate related equipment.
  • Knowledge of tools of the trade and safety regulations (WHMIS, Fall Protection).
  • Willingness to work overtime and respond to after-hours calls as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general maintenance and renovations work pertaining to Carpenter’s trade.
  • Installs floors, walls, ceilings, shelves, partitions, doors, glass, hardware, etc.
  • Constructs and installs custom cabinetry and millwork.
  • Erects and works from scaffolding and lifts as required.
  • Complies with the Nova Scotia OH&S Act and university rules.
  • Maintains a clean work environment and performs other duties as required.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Trade Supervisor and/or Manager, the incumbent is responsible for carpentry related work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs general maintenance and renovations work pertaining to Carpenter’s trade
  • Installs floors, walls, ceilings, shelves, partitions, doors, glass, hardware, formwork, etc., and associated materials
  • Constructs and installs custom cabinetry and millwork
  • Erects, dismantles and works from various types of scaffolding and lifts
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
  • Maintains a clean work environment
  • Performs other duties as required
Note

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Carpenter certificate of qualification recognised by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration
  • Completion of certified trades school program preferred
  • Five years recent and related journey person experience in related construction and/or maintenance in a commercial or institutional environment
  • Cabinet construction and installation experience preferredFamiliar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety act, as well as University and government rules and regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints
  • Ability to take direction
  • Proven ability to direct others in foreperson capacity
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Computer literacy an asset
  • Good communication and organization skills

  • Knowledge of tools of the trade
