Job description

About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion in cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long-term solutions for the growing aging population.

The Role

We’re looking for a Principal or Staff level Electrical Systems Engineer who wants to play a critical role in architecting and delivering next-generation implantable and wearable medical systems.

This role sits at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and system integration, and is responsible for translating early-stage concepts into robust, production-ready Class III medical devices.

You will report to the Director of Hardware Engineering (or equivalent) and drive system-level design decisions across electrical architecture, embedded systems, and validation strategy.

Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work on site from our Alameda Headquarters 5 days a week.

How We Work
  • We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others’ time.
  • We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another.
  • We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives.
  • Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don’t know. Getting it right matters more than being right.
What You’ll Do

System Architecture & Design

  • Define and architect end-to-end electrical systems for implantable and external medical devices.
  • Translate product requirements into system specifications, including power, signal integrity, communication, and safety constraints.
  • Drive design trade-offs across performance, power consumption, reliability, and manufacturability.

Hardware Development

  • Design and develop PCBAs, including schematic capture, layout guidance, and component selection.
  • Lead development of analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, including MCU-based systems and communication interfaces.
  • Support rapid prototyping and iteration cycles.

Embedded Systems & Firmware

  • Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ to enable hardware functionality and system integration.
  • Collaborate with firmware/software teams to debug and optimize system performance.
  • Build reusable libraries and system-level abstractions.

Integration, Testing & Validation

  • Define and execute system-level verification and validation strategies.
  • Debug complex hardware/firmware interactions across subsystems.
  • Partner with test engineering to develop automated validation platforms.

Productization & Compliance

  • Work with cross-functional teams to transition prototypes into production-ready medical devices.
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., Class III medical device standards).
  • Support risk analysis and design verification processes.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including schematics, BOMs, test plans, and design history.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams.
  • Communicate technical decisions clearly across engineering and leadership teams.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, depending on education and experience
  • Strong experience in embedded hardware design and PCB development
  • Hands-on experience debugging complex electronic systems
  • Proficiency in embedded programming (C/C++, Python)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with implantable or medical-grade devices (Class II/III preferred)
  • Strong background in mixed-signal design, power management, and low-power systems
  • Familiarity with PCB tools such as Altium Designer
  • Experience with system integration across hardware, firmware, and software
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (FDA, IEC standards)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and strong ownership mindset
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in lab environments, including bench testing and hardware debugging
  • Occasional lifting of lab equipment and hardware prototypes
Benefits

Full-time employees are eligible for the following benefits listed below.

  • Competitive base salary with equity
  • 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents
  • Generous vacation policy
