Job description

About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion in cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long-term solutions for the growing aging population.

The Role

We’re looking for an intern to support hardware development, by building, testing, and validating devices across implantable, wearables, and robotics systems for 6 months.
As an engineering intern, you will report to the Robotics manager, but support engineering teams company-wide.

Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, and expected to work on site from our Alameda Headquarters 5 days a week.

How We Work
  • We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others’ time.

  • We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another.

  • We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives.

  • Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don’t know. Getting it right matters more than being right.

Key Responsibilities
Build & Assembly Support
  • Update and resize 3D models (e.g. SOLIDWORKS) to fit a range of sizes and configurations, working from measurement data and fit feedback.

  • 3D print components on FDM and SLA printers, including slicing, print setup, and post-processing (support removal, curing, cleanup).

  • Fabricate and machine components as needed using standard shop tools (hand tools, drill press, sanding/filing, adhesives, fasteners).

  • Assemble printed and fabricated components into complete assemblies, including integration of sensors, wiring, and mechanical hardware.

  • Validate assembled devices on the benchtop test system, following established test protocols.

  • Collect, organize, and log device performance for engineering review.

  • Maintain build and test records (build logs, deviations, part traceability) consistent with our design-control documentation practices.

  • Track component inventory and consumables (filament, resin, fasteners, sensors) and flag reorder needs.

  • Work closely with mechanical, software, and electrical engineers to troubleshoot fit, assembly, and performance issues, and support root-cause investigation of build defects.

Testing Support
  • Design and fabricate test fixtures to support repeatable mechanical, electrical, and functional testing of devices and subassemblies.

  • Execute test protocols and test plans across benchtop, functional, and environmental testing, accurately capturing setup conditions, procedures, and observations.

  • Analyze and report test data and summarize findings for engineering review.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (completed or nearly complete) in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Working proficiency in SolidWorks, including editing existing models and updating dimensions/sizing.

  • Hands-on experience with FDM and SLA 3D printing — slicing software, printer operation, and post-processing.

  • Comfort with precision hand-assembly of small mechanical and electromechanical parts (fasteners, adhesives, connectors, light wiring).

  • Strong attention to detail and disciplined documentation

  • Comfortable interacting directly with study participants in a professional, welcoming, and reassuring manner.

  • Strong written communication skills for drafting SOPs, test plans, and reports.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand or sit at a workbench for extended periods; lift/carry up to 15 lbs; operate hand tools, 3D printers, and shop equipment; and work in close physical proximity with study participants during fittings, measurements, and scans.

Internship Logistics
  • Duration: 6 months, starting September or October 2026

  • Commitment: 30-40 hours/week

  • Location: Onsite in Alameda, CA 5 days a week

  • Compensation: $30-$40/hour, based on experience

  • Employment Type: W-2 position
