Valbruna ASW Inc., the premier specialty steel-making facility located in Welland, ON, has an immediate requirement for the following position:
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

Reporting through the Maintenance and Engineering group, the Electrical Engineer is responsible for the following:
- Troubleshoot, maintain and manage capital upgrades to electrical infrastructure and control systems operating at high voltage (115 kV), medium voltage (27.6 kV or 4.16 kV), low voltage (480 V), DC (250 VDC), small load (120 VAC) and control (24 VDC) levels.
- Coordinate the high voltage preventative and corrective maintenance program including annual infrared (IR) inspections of substation equipment, insulator cleaning, and oil tests of transformers.
- Coordinate the medium voltage preventative and corrective maintenance program including regular servicing and cleaning of Siemens and Joslyn breakers, transformers and switchgear.
- Coordinate the backup diesel generator preventative and corrective maintenance program to ensure regular testing and service.
- Supervise and/or support in-house automation technicians and electricians to troubleshoot and maintain electrical infrastructure and control systems.
- Act as company liaison with Hydro One and IESO with respect to shutdown scheduling, maintenance and communication.
- Manage multiple capital projects simultaneously, from conceptualization through to commissioning by first generating scopes of work, RFQ packages, schedules and cost estimates, then supervising selected contractors until project completion.
- Ensure compliance with codes, standards and regulations including, but not limited to, the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Coordinate the activities of and provide technical direction to external consulting engineers.
- Support and promote the company’s health and safety objectives at all times, including the incorporation of hazard and risk management into design work and process development.
- Develop engineering processes, standards and equipment specifications.
- Execute in-house electrical engineering studies/assessments and design work.
- Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will possess the following
qualifications and attributes:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
- Current and valid Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license with Professional Engineers Ontario, or eligibility to register, is required.
- Minimum of 5 years electrical engineering experience. Experience working in a heavy industrial plant and with high voltage infrastructure is preferred.
- Must have relevant experience in the design, troubleshooting and maintenance of power distribution systems including substations, transformers, distribution infrastructure, standby power generation and UPS backups, switchgear, motors, grounding systems and controls.
- Good mechanical aptitude to understand the application of electrical design and automation to the operation of pumps, hydraulics, fans and other industrial equipment.
- Working knowledge of PLC programming, including ladder logic and structured text, is required.
- Working knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC hardware (ControlLogix/GuardLogix 5580, 1794 Flex I/O) and software is required.
- Working knowledge of an HMI software is required, preferably Ignition.
- Experience with motor control/VFD design and commissioning.
- Experience with industrial instrumentation, including PID loop controls, would be an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
