Job summary

Alstom in Whitby, ON is seeking a full-time Health & Safety Specialist to drive environmental, health and safety initiatives at the site. You will work with operations, HR, and partners to implement safety programs and ensure regulatory compliance.

The role emphasizes risk assessments, emergency planning, EHS management, audits, training, and incident reporting. A local safety qualification and 2+ years in EHS are preferred; railway experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • A recognized Health & Safety qualification as required by local authorities.
  • A diploma or degree in Environmental Management or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in Environment, Health, and Safety, ideally in manufacturing or regional centers.
  • Knowledge of ISO14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO45001 standards.
  • Strong understanding of local legal requirements.
  • Experience in the railway industry (a plus).
  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking and a rigorous mindset.
  • Proficiency in computer tools and continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Driving implementation of EHS policies and initiatives at the site level.
  • Support development of a strong EHS culture for continuous improvement.
  • Support site management in achieving EHS results and deploying yearly plans.
  • Conduct risk assessments and define measures to control risks.
  • Prepare, implement, and maintain emergency plans.
  • Monitor subcontractor activities for EHS compliance.
  • Develop and maintain the site’s EHS Management System.
  • Lead internal EHS audits and inspections.
  • Drive EHS training and communication plans.
  • Report and analyze accidents/incidents to identify corrective actions.

Could you be the full-time Health & Safety Specialist in Toronto (ON), CA we’re looking for?


Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your safety and environmental expertise in a cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside dedicated, proactive, and collaborative teammates.

You’ll play a key role in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our people and contractors while minimizing environmental impacts and protecting Alstom’s assets. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (such as operations, HR, and social partners), develop and implement safety programs, and monitor compliance with local and global standards—and much more.

You’ll specifically take care of driving the implementation of our Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies and initiatives at the site level, but also support the development of a strong EHS culture to ensure continuous improvement.

We’ll look to you for:

Supporting site management in achieving EHS results and deploying yearly EHS plans aligned with Alstom’s strategy

Conducting risk assessments and defining measures to control risks

Preparing, implementing, and maintaining emergency plans

Monitoring subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with EHS standards

Developing and maintaining the site’s EHS Management System and ensuring compliance with local legal requirements

Leading internal EHS audits and inspections

Driving EHS training and communication plans

Reporting and analysing accidents/incidents to identify corrective actions
