Basic Function :
The Research & Compliance Specialist is responsible for providing assistance to the Research & Compliance Office within the Wildlife Science Division and assists with core research operations and regulatory compliance activities. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Responsibilities :
- Assists the Research & Compliance Officer with correspondence, memos and reports, filing research documentation, special events and programs, as well as organizing and taking minutes at meetings and site inspections.
- Performs editing and research duties as required, including data entry and ongoing maintenance of multiple databases.
- Supports the collection of information and documents for CCAC pre-assessment, AZA accreditation, and Animals for Research Act inspections. Assists with planning, logistics, and report preparation for visits and hearings. Monitors animal use protocols from approval to completion, conducts post-approval monitoring, and ensures compliance with protocols. Maintains databases for animal care and compliance initiatives, tracks research and animal use data, and updates SharePoint pages. Coordinates facility visits and transportation of guests. Assists with conservation projects and other divisional duties.
Experience Required
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in an animal research-related field plus professional designation/certification in lab animal science. Registered Lab Animal Technician and/or Veterinary Technician preferred, or equivalent training/experience.
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in a similar role.
- Experience with animal care committees and protocol approval processes is an asset.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Knowledge of AZA standards, CCAC policies, and provincial legislation related to animal research.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in preparing reports, charts, and manuscripts.
- Exceptional typing skills and knowledge of biological terminology.
- Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS is an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and good driving record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, OneDrive, and email.
- Availability to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as scheduled.
- Ability to work courteously with staff and the public.
- Physical ability to meet job demands. Candidates may need to provide police reference checks and driver’s abstracts. May be required to pass written and practical exams.
