Job description

This remote role is a temporary assignment for 16-18 months through September 2026. Benefits are included in this opportunity. Talent must live near the Ottawa site to visit once a month for trainings and team meetings.

The CBSA Canada Compliance Specialist II will collaborate with various agencies, including but not limited to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), The Fisheries and Oceans Canada (FOC), Global Affairs Canada (GAC), Natural Resources Canada (NR), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Transport Canada (TC).

What Will You Do?

  • Ensure compliance with Canada customs laws, regulations and procedures.
  • Lead all aspects of import and export activities, including classification, valuation, and country of origin determination.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers to ensure timely clearance of shipments.
  • Collaborate with teams, such as procurement, logistics, and finance, to ensure accurate and complete customs documentation.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments.
  • Stay updated on changes in regulations and communicate updates and changes to relevant collaborators.
  • Resolve customs-related issues or disputes in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in compliance with customs regulations.
  • Mentor and support to internal teams on customs compliance matters.
  • Establish and be a phenomenal partner with Canadian customs authorities and other relevant government agencies.
  • Stay informed about international trade agreements and programs that may impact customs compliance.
  • Analyze customs data to identify trends, opportunities for improvement, and potential risks.
  • Perform transactional activities related to the above areas of regulation.
  • Coordinate with other Canada Customs team members on various activities, such as uniform process development, CSA review for risk evaluation, and the review of products / services subject to Participating Government Agencies / SWI. Manage other duties as assigned.

How Will I Get Here?

Requirement Qualifications :

  • 3+ years of experience in customs compliance, specifically with a focus on Canadian customs regulations.
  • Validated understanding of Canadian customs laws, including tariff classification, valuation, origin determination, and customs documentation requirements.
  • Excellent understanding of USMCA, CETA, and WTO regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complicated customs regulations and apply them to practical situations.
  • Excellent communication and social skills to collaborate internally and externally.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite to support the operation in its daily functions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Evolving business through digital innovation.
  • Ability to prioritise multiple projects, involving cross business functionality.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area.
  • Post Secondary Diploma in Customs / Border Services Administration or International Trade.
  • Technical or scientific background.
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS).
  • Experience in delivering training.
