Role Title: Assistant or Associate Actuary, Corporate Actuarial
Purpose of Role

The Assistant or Associate Actuary supports the Canadian IFRS17 valuation process and other projects related to the Appointed Actuary function. Responsibilities include ensuring best practices in valuation modeling, supporting assumption review processes, and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

This role involves coordinating quarterly reporting by managing actuarial staff and collaborating with various departments. The incumbent will lead the development and enhancement of valuation models, work closely with actuarial teams and key stakeholders such as Planning, Finance, Audit, and the U.K. actuarial team.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  1. Coordinate quarterly IFRS17 reporting activities, including liability and asset data loading, assumption updates, Risk Integrity project setup, and OSFI filings.
  2. Lead quarterly MD&A earnings analysis, providing strategic insights and recommendations to senior management.
  3. Assist in preparing the annual Appointed Actuary Report (AAR) for the enterprise and the Canadian insurance subsidiary.
  4. Support communication with auditors, regulators, and external consultants regarding IFRS17 deliverables.
  5. Implement annual changes, lead modeling projects, and improve processes for ongoing value creation.
  6. Conduct data analyses for annual experience studies and contribute to assumption setting.
  7. Maintain actuarial process documentation compliant with standards and legislation.
  8. Stay updated on financial reporting changes and industry standards, assessing regulatory implications.
  9. Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders across various teams.
  10. Manage and mentor actuarial students and interns, fostering their professional growth.
Key Qualifications
  • Recently qualified FCIA Actuary with relevant life insurance experience and at least 3 years of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of Canadian valuation, capital requirements, and regulations.
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and innovative thinking skills.
  • Ability to champion ideas and drive continuous improvement.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Expertise in AXIS, Risk Integrity, and DataLink.
  • Proficient in Excel and VBA.
  • Understanding of Canadian and US financial products, including life insurance, annuities, and segregated funds.
  • Effective communicator capable of presenting ideas and negotiating across disciplines and levels.
  • Experience in leading and developing junior staff through mentorship and participation in projects.
