Position Overview: The Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) serves as the subject matter experts for all rental large equipment (LE) maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Ensuring all assigned LE fleet is rental ready for our customers. The HET is responsible for providing LE technical expertise to store TRC associates, Mobile Service Technicians, and customers, as well as, completing routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of rental fleet in assigned stores. The HET must plan and coordinate their day by balancing the prioritization of rental business objectives and customer service demands. The Heavy Equipment Technician must uphold The Home Depot’s core values and project a positive image. While maintaining a high level of professionalism, following The Home Depot’s safety policies and procedures are critical to performing their role as HET. Each associate has the responsibility of providing a safe working environment by following all safety policies & standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Preventative Maintenance and Repairs: Responsible for maintaining a fleet of rental equipment at store and company shop locations, and customer job sites. Ensure fleet inventory accuracy and GPS system is operational, with 3 points of security on all towable equipment. Complete major repairs for LE fleet in assigned store locations. Diagnose faults or malfunctions, maintain, inspect and repair all components of the machine, including gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems, and brake systems. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and order parts within 48 hours of a tool being placed on the Down List. Notify Regional Rental Manager (RRM) of any delays.
  2. Daily Responsibilities and Expectations: Heavy Equipment Technician are responsible for fostering a culture of customer service & support and should GET involved with TRC associates to provide the solutions our rental customers need to successfully complete their projects. Obtains parts needed for repairs and while maintaining timely and accurate parts inventory. Assists with equipment deployment, pre-delivery inspections (PDI), deliveries and auctions as required. Communicate effectively, both verbal and written, partnering with store TRC associates, teammates, and customers.
  3. Documentation: Utilize equipment reporting to formulate efficient service strategies with Mobile Service Technicians (MSTs) to ensure timely completion of all open RSN tickets, repairs, store/lift Inspections, PMs, and Safety Campaigns/Bulletins and communicate prioritization to RRM. Utilizes company technology platform to document all work performed on equipment, including labor and parts. Lay out workflow process prioritizing key action items to improve efficiency. Communicate any LE rental status updates to store TRC associates and ensure work orders are completed in D365 including documentation for all parts and repairs. Maintain vehicle compliance in accordance with company, provincial regulations and Ministry of Transportation guidelines and maintain & certify accurate Electronic Logging Device (ELD - Samsara), Hours of Service (HOS) driver logs/vehicle inspections and vehicle documentation. Maintains accurate fleet inventory and transfers equipment between locations. Coordinate with RRM to provide training and support to store TRCs on LE standards operating procedures (SOP) and best practices. Respond to customer service calls by responding to emails with relevant status updates, coordinating with customer on facilitating repair, and arriving on-site within 24 hours. Check in with RRM at beginning and end of day.
  4. Safety Compliance: Work in accordance with all safety protocols by following all Home Depot policies, such as: Home Depot's standards of Performance, safe driving practices, using proper lifting techniques, and utilizing all necessary and prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE). Follow all safety and Hazmat procedures. Maintain Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) certifications and store inspection compliance. Perform other duties as assigned.

Direct Manager/Direct Reports: This position reports to the Regional Rental Manager.


Travel Requirements: May require overnight travel less than 15% of the time.


Physical Requirements: May include physical demands such as lifting (up to 50 lbs.) from the waist, lifting from the shoulder, prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, crawling underneath equipment, climbing on top of equipment, reaching, and stretching. Environment will require repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements, including skilled work with fingers. Occasionally, employee will be required to work at heights and climb onto equipment. Parking lot work: working outdoors in extreme hot and cold temperatures; working around dirt, grease, fumes, oils, and chemicals; prolonged exposure to loud noises from engines, compressors, power tools, and equipment.

Certifications: Current Trade certification - Heavy duty equipment (provincial or interprovincial)


Other Requirements/Assets: Must be 18 year or older. Must be legally permitted to work in Canada. Must pass a background check. Resides within 25 kms of target city or willing to commute to base location. Regular scheduled shifts may include weekends and may be asked to work outside of regularly scheduled shifts. Working knowledge of handheld technology (ex. smartphone, laptop, tablet, applications, etc.). Must provide own standard tools used in the trade/craft. Ability to diagnose and complete advanced mechanical repairs, including engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Ability to read and understand technical repair and parts manuals for equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other components. Knowledge of and/or experience driving delivery trucks, towing tandem axle utility trailers and towable construction equipment, operating safely within high traffic or congested city zones and in small areas. Working understanding of safe load securement, tie downs, and transport. Working knowledge and understanding of Ministry of Transportation guidelines and Safety regulations. Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, including weather, traffic, and others. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, doing what is necessary to exceed customer expectations. Experience in equipment rental industry, auto/truck mechanic, oil and gas mechanical, light industrial equipment, mechanical/technical aptitude. Ability to work effectively with different personality types and all levels of associates. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
