Job description

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Grid Planning & Operations Engineering, the Manager, System Projects leads a team of engineers to convert AESO’s Long Term Plan into actionable transmission system projects. Responsibilities include preparing and filing Needs Identification Document (NID) applications with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and guiding projects through regulatory approval and delivery by transmission facility owners (TFOs).

This role requires close collaboration with TFOs and internal teams such as Grid Planning, Regulatory, Communications, Markets, and Customer Grid Access. Strong expertise in power flow analysis, system stability, and regulatory frameworks is essential for strategic decision-making and overcoming transmission system challenges.

Role Expectations

Create engaging employee experiences through onboarding, coaching, and professional development. Communicate complex engineering findings effectively to internal and external stakeholders. Build strong relationships with stakeholders and external organizations such as WECC, NERC, NWPP, IRC.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage the System Projects group, including budgeting and staffing.
  2. Implement transmission planning aspects of the Transmission Regulation.
  3. Prepare NID applications and support projects through regulatory processes to delivery.
  4. Develop and evaluate technical, economic, social, and environmental alternatives, including non-wires options.
  5. Conduct system planning studies for NID applications, such as power flow and stability analyses.
  6. Lead stakeholder engagement and act as an expert witness during public hearings.
  7. Support transmission system planning and develop relationships with TFOs.
  8. Represent the organization in external committees and organizations.
  9. Promote a collaborative environment and provide technical leadership and advice.
Required Skills and Experience
  1. Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  2. Professional Engineer registered with APEGA, responsible member status required.
  3. At least 15 years of industry experience, with 8+ years in transmission planning.
  4. Deep understanding of power system stability, power flow, and challenges with IBRs.
  5. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
  6. Knowledge of Alberta’s energy markets, transmission, and regulatory environment.
