The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Grid Planning & Operations Engineering, the Manager, System Projects leads a team of engineers in converting AESO’s Long Term Plan into actionable transmission system projects. This includes preparing and filing Needs Identification Document (NID) applications with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and guiding projects through regulatory approval and delivery by transmission facility owners (TFOs).

This role requires close collaboration with TFOs and internal teams such as Grid Planning, Regulatory, Communications, Markets, and Customer Grid Access to ensure project success. Strong expertise in power flow analysis, system stability, and regulatory frameworks is essential for strategic decisions and overcoming transmission system challenges.

Key Accountabilities
  • Manage the System Projects group, including budgeting and staffing.
  • Implement transmission planning aspects of the Transmission Regulation.
  • Prepare NID applications and support projects through regulatory processes to delivery.
  • Develop and evaluate project alternatives considering technical, economic, social, and environmental factors.
  • Conduct system planning studies supporting NID applications.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement activities related to system projects and NIDs.
  • Act as an expert witness during public hearings.
  • Support transmission system planning for the Transmission Connection Projects team.
  • Develop relationships with TFOs to support Facility Applications.
  • Oversee involvement in external organizations like WECC, NERC, NWPP, IRC.
  • Foster dialogue among disciplines related to system planning.
  • Provide technical leadership and promote a unified understanding of issues.
Skills and Experiences
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • Professional Engineer registered with APEGA.
  • At least 15 years in the electricity industry, including 8+ years in transmission planning.
  • Understanding of company vision, strategies, and Alberta’s regulatory framework.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Deep knowledge of power system stability and challenges with IBRs.
  • Ability to manage initiatives and conflicts effectively.
  • Decision-making skills considering risks and benefits.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s energy markets, transmission, distribution, and project development.
