The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is the province’s medical regulator. We have a mission to serve the public interest in Ontario’s health system, ensuring patients receive quality care from fully trained, highly competent, deeply compassionate, and ethically guided doctors.

Reporting to the Director, Communications, Policy and External Affairs, the Communications Lead is a dynamic self-starter, seasoned communicator and experienced people leader, who oversees a team of professionals to deliver high-quality and timely communications to various audiences across diverse channels and platforms. The Lead drives transformational change and continuous improvement in communications and oversees the development and implementation of strategic initiatives in support of the CPSO’s mission, vision, and strategic goals to maintain and enhance our brand reputation.

Responsibilities :

  • Lead daily operations of the Communications team, including transformational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and implement effective and measurable communication strategies, plans and tactics to raise awareness and understanding of the CPSO’s work, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including the public, media, members of the profession, colleagues, government, and the health-sector.
  • Research, write and edit copy in plain language for various digital and traditional channels, including executive communications, key messages, talking points, speeches, scripts, magazine articles, website and intranet, digital newsletters, social media, member mailings, promotional materials, etc.
  • Support communications requirements for senior College leadership.
  • Work closely with senior leadership, Communications team colleagues, and internal stakeholders, as needed, on issue and crisis management activities to provide reputational support to the organization.
  • Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and health-sector stakeholders.
  • Review and respond to media requests, including requests for information, interviews, and other news making opportunities.
  • Measure the effectiveness and impact of communication initiatives, using data and analytics to evaluate and improve performance and outcomes.
  • Act on behalf of the Director, Communications, Policy and External Affairs, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in the planning, development and implementation of all aspects of corporate communications, including extensive media relations and executive communications expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, concise, and engaging messages using plain language for various audiences.
  • Demonstrated high-level of political acuity, ability to meet tight deadlines, work under pressure and handle confidential and sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Experienced people leader and collaborative team player, with the proven ability to lead, coach, and provide constructive feedback, to manage performance and support skills development.
  • Extensive experience advising and interacting with senior leaders.
  • Excellent strategic planning, execution, and project management skills.
  • Adept at managing issues and crises.
  • Experience with change management and continuous improvement initiatives, including in the area of digital communications.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills, and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Advanced technology proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of regulatory sector trends, and the ability to anticipate, pivot and respond to changing requirements, needs and expectations.

Note : It is a fundamental requirement of employment with CPSO that employees reside in Ontario and can attend the College office as required. Must be able to provide proof of double vaccination.

Work environment : Hybrid, remote work with in-office attendance one day per week and / or more as needed.

Hiring Range : $104,579-$130,725
