Educational Assistant - Temporary

We are inviting applications for a Temporary Educational Assistant at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, Stratford.

The Educational Assistant supports students to positively impact their faith development, well-being, and education. The Educational Assistant assists students while fostering and enhancing an inclusive learning environment. Responsibilities include providing support to students for their academic, behaviour, safety, medical, and physical needs. Educational assistants support students both individually and/or in a group setting. This position reports to the school Principal and works with the Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) and classroom teacher. This temporary position will be available immediately until June 27, 2025, 35 hours per week, at St. Michael Secondary School in Stratford, Ontario. This assignment includes busing duties. The rate of pay is $25.65 per hour plus vacation pay.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide educational support in compliance with education-related legislation, standards, regulations, policies, health and safety legislation, and the Board's policies and practices, emphasizing inclusion.
  2. Support and implement strategies to promote positive school climates that contribute to a safe, caring, and faith-based educational setting.
  3. Assist with the inclusion of students in all classroom and school activities.
  4. Increase access and reduce barriers encountered by students throughout their school day, accommodating their strengths and needs.
  5. Collaborate with the School and/or System Team, providing input in developing and revising Individual Education Plans (IEPs)/behaviour/safety plans of students.
  6. Support the implementation of IEP/behaviour/safety plan components under the direction of teachers and administrators based on individual student needs.
  7. Promote the development of independence in students by assisting in creating social stories, learning materials, visuals, schedules, reinforcement systems, etc.
  8. Assist students in attaining essential social and job-related skills.
  9. Support students with personal care needs in consultation with relevant teams, specialists, and family members.
  10. Assist with lifting, positioning, and transferring using appropriate equipment, in collaboration with specialists and teams.
  11. Help implement strategies supporting the appropriate use of assistive technologies and communication aids.
  12. Monitor, record, and communicate data related to behaviour, performance, and progress of students.
  13. Participate in projects and initiatives that contribute to a positive, faith-based educational experience.
  14. Model positive and pro-social behaviour with students, staff, community partners, and families.
  15. Act professionally, adhering to all work-related standards.
Qualifications
  • Minimum two-year college diploma in Educational Support, Child Youth Worker, Developmental Service Worker, or Social Service Worker.
  • Experience in a school, educational setting, or childcare is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCVI) training.
  • Experience working with children with diverse exceptionalities, including behavioural challenges.
  • Problem-solving skills for day-to-day issues; refer complex matters to teachers or administrators promptly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle inquiries from various individuals, including sensitive issues.
  • Patience, empathy, and capacity to work closely with students with complex needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Computer skills, including Google Workspace.
  • Reliable attendance.
