The ideal candidate is warm, caring, and capable of making meaningful connections with residents. The Program Therapist reports to the Programs Manager and collaborates as part of the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement, and evaluate programs, outings, and events that meet residents’ physical, social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and cultural needs.

Responsibilities:

  1. Complete documentation and accurate records, including program guides, participation tracking, monthly statistics, intake documentation, quarterly reports, MDS/RAPS, care plan updates, progress notes, and assessments to determine residents' recreation and rehabilitation needs.
  2. Plan and implement programs based on resident assessments, offering innovative and creative recreational activities regularly.
  3. Organize and execute special events, community programs, and outings.
  4. Evaluate programs and make necessary adaptations.
  5. Assess equipment needs and ensure residents have access to appropriate assistive devices (e.g., wheelchair, walker).
  6. Participate in departmental, unit, and multidisciplinary care meetings.
  7. Maintain effective communication and positive human relations with residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
  8. Ensure posters, notices, and calendars are current, attractive, and easy to read.
  9. Coordinate media notices related to creative programming with the Programs Manager.
  10. Develop and sustain community contacts and resources.
  11. Collaborate with community agencies to deliver programming.
  12. Understand quality indicators used by the Home and participate in their improvement.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. A post-secondary diploma, degree, or certificate in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, gerontology, or related fields from an Ontario post-secondary institution.
  2. Or an equivalent qualification from another jurisdiction, deemed appropriate by the licensee.
  3. Relevant experience working with seniors and training on GPA, PIECES, U FIRST, and related statements.
  4. Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs.
  5. Computer literacy.
  6. Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  7. Knowledge of RAI-MDS; AIS certification is preferred, or must be completed within one year of hire.
  8. Second language skills (e.g., Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, Eastern European languages) are an asset.
  9. CPR and First Aid certifications.
  10. Empathy and the ability to turn tasks into positive social interactions.
  11. Ability to meet legal requirements, promote individual rights, and assess and reduce risks.
  12. Current Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Background Check.
  13. Proof of up-to-date vaccines as per health requirements.
  14. Two supervisory references.
  15. French language skills are an asset.
