Position Details

Position Title: Group Short Term Disability Claims Specialist
Reports To: Manager, Life STD LTD Claims
Department: Group Disability Life Claims
Term: Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangements

This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement, and some roles may require more in-office days.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze medical, functional, employment, and contractual information to make timely and accurate decisions on STD claims.
  • Manage open STD claims using problem-solving and analytical skills, seeking timely resolutions.
  • Calculate benefits payable and make adjustments, including offsets for CPP Disability Benefits and overpayment calculations.
  • Implement cost-effective case management tools to assist disabled employees (e.g., Rehabilitation Interventions, Functional Abilities Evaluations, Independent Medical Examinations, Medical Consultant Referrals).
  • Provide superior written and verbal customer service, maintaining clear, well-documented files.
  • Communicate frequently with plan sponsors, members, advisors, medical and legal professionals.
  • Participate actively in client meetings.
  • Communicate professionally and empathetically with clients, many of whom may be experiencing difficult life situations.
  • Use problem-solving skills to make tough claims decisions and communicate these clearly.
  • Show conflict resolution skills to de-escalate situations with dissatisfied clients.
Qualifications
  • Proficient in English, spoken and written.
  • 2+ years’ STD and/or LTD claims management experience preferred.
  • University degree or College Diploma in health-related fields (e.g., nursing, occupational therapy, kinesiology, psychology, social services) or relevant disability claims adjudication experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance operations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of insurance.
  • Understanding of various group contracts is helpful.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Negotiation and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Conflict management and de-escalation abilities.
  • Strong personal boundaries and time management skills.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly to clients.
