Group Long Term Disability Claims Specialist

Position Title : Group Long Term Disability Claims Specialist

Reports To : Manager, Life & Disability Claims

Department : Group Life & Disability Claims

Term : Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangements : Hybrid role based in Waterloo, ON. Minimum two (2) consecutive days in the office every other week, plus one (1) additional day per month. More days may be required depending on role needs.

At Equitable, we offer personalized support to plan sponsors and members, assisting in recovery and return-to-work processes. Ideal candidates have experience in disability adjudication or related health/professional fields, and a passion for making a positive impact.

What you will be doing :

  • Analyze medical, functional, employment, and contractual information to make accurate and timely LTD claim decisions.
  • Manage open LTD claims proactively, resolving issues efficiently.
  • Calculate benefits and adjust payments as needed, considering offsets and overpayments.
  • Implement cost-effective case management tools to support disabled employees.
  • Provide high-quality written and verbal customer service, maintaining clear documentation.
  • Communicate regularly with plan sponsors, members, advisors, medical and legal professionals.
  • Participate actively in client meetings.
  • Show empathy and professionalism in all client communications, especially during emotionally charged situations.
  • Make informed decisions on claims, clearly explaining outcomes to clients.
  • Resolve conflicts effectively and de-escalate tense situations.

What you will bring :

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • At least 2 years of STD/LTD claims management experience.
  • Degree or diploma in health-related or disability management fields preferred, or relevant adjudication experience.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance operations and contracts.
  • Excellent negotiation, conflict management, and customer service skills.
  • Analytical and mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts simply.
  • Adaptability to a dynamic environment and changing priorities.
  • Bilingual in English/French is an asset.
