Job Description

The Opportunity:

We have a new opportunity for a Geotechnical Technician to join our team on a full-time basis, located in either Fort McMurray, Edmonton, or Calgary, Alberta. You will be part of the Field Services – Major Projects team within our Ground Engineering group. This role offers the chance to develop your geotechnical technical skills in the field. The ideal candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.

A day in the life…

  • Promote safety culture by ensuring adherence to site-specific HSE policies and safety standards.
  • Monitor geotechnical drilling, instrumentation installation, and core sample recovery.
  • Classify soil and bedrock samples and conduct various field tests on soils, bedrock, and groundwater.
  • Install instruments related to slope stability and foundation investigation.
  • Take readings from geotechnical instruments such as slope inclinometers, SAA, VW, etc.
  • Program, install, and download data from data loggers.
  • Compile field data, maintain records, and coordinate work, including communication via verbal and written means.
  • Monitor and report construction observations and results, providing guidance during construction.
  • Manage various contractors.

What You Will Bring To WSP…

  • Completion of a Geological, Construction, or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma Program.
  • Experience with geotechnical drilling, especially with installing geotechnical instruments.
  • Experience working in the Alberta Oil Sands region is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including shifts from 1 to 3 weeks (days/nights).
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to tasks and priorities.
  • Standard First Aid Level C with AED, CSTS, CSO, and H2S Alive certifications are assets.
  • Pre-access drug and alcohol testing required.
  • Unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license valid in Alberta.
