Job summary

Greater Vancouver Food Bank in Burnaby, BC, is hiring a Driver on a full-time permanent basis. The role involves collecting food from donors, delivering to distribution sites and partner locations, and providing warehouse support.

Qualifications

  • BC Class 5 clean driving license is required.
  • Class 3 license is advantageous.
  • Provide 3 years insurance claims history and 3 years clean driving abstract.
  • 1+ years experience operating industrial machinery in a warehouse is advantageous.
  • Commercial driving experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint and iPhone technology is expected.
  • Flexibility around work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vans and various trucks to pick up and deliver food as scheduled.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections for safety and reliability.
  • Load and unload goods, manage pallets and weight distribution.
  • Support warehouse tasks including receiving, inventory, and data entry.
  • Assist in training new Drivers as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of functional areas.

This is a full-time permanent position, with the opportunity to learn and grow. The successful candidate can expect a competitive base wage of $57,955-$60,500 annually, depending on experience.

Position Overview

The Driver is responsible for the collection of food from donor locations, and delivery to our distribution sites and Community Agency Partner locations. Acting as a GVFB brand ambassador, the Driver builds relationships with our donors and vendors, delivers to our distribution sites, as well as provides warehouse support through Forklift operations and inventory management. This is a multi-faceted, highly engaging, and important role for the GVFB. The Driver is a team player with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, a solid understanding of operations, and the ability to act as a GVFB champion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate several different vehicles such as vans, 3-ton trucks, 5-ton trucks, and/or 10-ton trucks to pick up and deliver food products as scheduled;
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, report defects and damage of the vehicles to ensure safety and reliability using digital technology;
  • Organize and load vans, light trucks, and/or medium duty trucks with an understanding of weight requirements, to maximize efficiency and load distribution;
  • Prepare and wrap pallets, and weigh and load all completed orders;
  • Ensure functional areas are kept clean and organized at all times;
  • Receive, unload, and put away incoming products into inventory;
  • Inspect and count inbound and outbound shipments for accuracy, food quality and/or damages;
  • Ensure all product returns are put away correctly in the warehouse, following internal processes. This includes supplies, nutrient recovery, and fresh, dry and frozen product;
  • Assist and provide training to new Drivers as needed;
  • Fuel trucks at card-lock locations;
  • Communicate and liaise with Driver Team Leads and/or Operations Manager;
  • Assist in other areas of the warehouse, including but not limited to, operating industrial machinery, distributing food, order picking, sorting, cleaning, and data entry;
  • Regular Warehouse Week cleaning and maintenance of all vehicles
Personal Attributes and Core Skills
  • Effective communication with GVFB staff at all levels, both in-person and through digital correspondence;
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, planning, time-management, and resource allocation skills;
  • Ability to deal constructively with challenges and consistently provide a solution-focused approach;
  • Flexibility in working in an every-changing environment where priorities can shift rapidly;

Qualifications and Experience

Physical Requirements
  • Exposure to ambient temperatures and noisy conditions;
  • Proper safety footwear required with reimbursements provided;
  • Bending and lifting boxes up to 50 lbs on a regular basis;

An ICBC report will be requested at the interview stage, to include (driver factor report, drivers abstract, commercial driving record if applicable, 5 years insurance and claims history record).

A criminal record check for working with vulnerable sectors is required upon hiring.
