Job summary

Calgary Food Bank is seeking a dedicated Driver to join our Logistics and Inventory team. You will transport hampers, maintain vehicle safety, and support the efficient delivery network for the city. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to accurate donation handling.

The position is full-time, 37.5 hours/week, with potential evenings and weekends. Benefits include RRSP matching, health accounts, and paid leave.

Qualifications

  • Experience driving a 5-ton is required.
  • Experience with a diverse range of people or in a customer service setting.
  • Forklift experience and food handling course are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and donors.
  • Represent the Food Bank publicly with professionalism at all times.
  • Evaluate donations for quality before accepting them.
  • Maintain and clean vehicles and perform basic maintenance.
  • Ensure pickups and deliveries are completed on schedule.
  • Drive safely and courteously.

Job description

At the Calgary Food Bank our mission is “to make food accessible to everyone in our city”. Our core belief is that no one in our community should go without food, and this continues to serve as our guiding principle for the future. We are the first line of emergency food support for people facing crisis and served over 200,000 Emergency Food Hampers to our community last year. We also provide over 80 partner charities throughout the city with food. As an organization, we pride ourselves on being client centered, community focused, and committed to excellence in both our operations and culture.

We are currently recruiting a community-minded, team-oriented individual to join our Logistics and Inventory department as a Driver.

Last year, the 13 vehicles in our fleet travelled 274, 200 km- that’s around the world almost 4 times! By establishing and maintaining good working relationships with suppliers and donors, our drivers play a key role in the Calgary Food Bank providing quality, nutritious food to clients and community partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with suppliers and donors of all kinds.
  • Representing the Food Bank in public and maintaining the public image of efficiency, courtesy, and professionalism at all times when on duty.
  • Evaluating donations for quality before accepting them.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of vehicle.
  • Ensuring that all scheduled pickups and deliveries are completed in a timely manner.
  • Driving safely and courteously at all times.
  • Accountability for the confidentially of all Food Bank business and client data/information that may be acquired through work at the CIFB.
  • Ensure safe food handling procedures are followed.
  • Safe and proper use of equipment.
  • Following all Health and Safety procedures, including completing any training that is required.
  • Participate in ensuring ongoing cleanliness of the CFB facility.
  • Any other duties that may be required in the warehouse as time permits.
Tasks Performed:
  • Notifying the Shift Supervisor if any unavoidable circumstances prevent the completion of pickups and deliveries on time as scheduled.
  • Proper recording of donations, ensuring paperwork is properly filled out before shift end. Handling cash donations.
  • Proper, safe loading and unloading of the truck.
  • Driver’s Daily Checklist to be filled out before leaving warehouse before each shift.
  • Performing minor preventative maintenance on trucks (i.e., check oil, maintain DEF fluid).
  • Ensuring that the truck box and cab are cleaned, and the truck is fuelled and properly prepared for the next shift.
  • Ensuring that store donation boxes are clean and in good condition and that all donation boxes leaving the building are in good condition.
  • Recording the temperatures of perishables, ensuring that the reefer is in good working condition, recording the reefer temperature and the unloading time, and report any issues.
  • Delivery of hampers to depot locations as required and ensuring pickup of crates as agreed.
  • Working in the warehouse as required by the Logistics and Inventory Manager.
  • Performing other tasks as required by the Transportation Supervisor.
Decision Making & Leadership Capabilities:
  • Must be able to make appropriate decisions in a fast-paced environment, maintain work schedules with little supervision and have flexibility required to perform the job functions in accordance with the Food Bank policies and procedures at all times.
  • Provides positive support and leadership to all volunteers. Providing positive support, information and leadership to all volunteers and casual drivers.
  • Maintain positive relationships with donors, to build strong relationships and increase donor impact.
Education & Experience Required:
  • Previous experience driving a 5-ton.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of people or in a customer service capacity.
  • Forklift experience and previous food handling course an asset.
  • Mechanical inclination an asset.
  • Clear Driver’s Abstract
  • Air Brake endorsement is an asset.
Skills & Capabilities:
  • Good knowledge of the city.
  • Must haveexcellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of people.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are normal for a warehouse and driving environment. Requires the ability to lift up to 50lbs repetitively and a high energy level. This is a full-time, 37.5 hour per week, 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day position. Hours worked beyond the regular work week must be pre- approved will be earned and taken as lieu time. You may be required to work certain evenings and weekends, but whenever possible advance notice will be given.
