Parkdale Community Food Bank

Department: Delivery Program

Location: In-Person (5 Brock Avenue, Toronto)

Employment Type: Part-Time 16 - 20 hours per week. Thursday - Saturday.

This is an existing vacancy.

We are currently seeking the ideal candidate to join our Delivery Team as the Delivery Program Assistant. This position supports our delivery program in a variety of ways, including inventory management assistance, supervising volunteers, working with the drop-in team to maximize efficiencies and supporting pick ups and deliveries on a daily basis.

Who We Are

Parkdale Community Food Bank (PCFB) is a non-profit, registered charity in the heart of Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood. Every month, our programs support more than 17,000 individuals with access to nutritious food and community support. We believe joy is fundamental to nourishment, and our mission is to create a hunger-free community where everyone has a place at our table, with barrier-free access to food they actually want to eat.

About the Delivery Program

PCFB founded one of the first completely free grocery delivery programs in Toronto back in 2020, to reach community members who couldn’t leave their homes during the pandemic. The program has kept going since, now serving people who face mobility or health barriers to visiting the food bank in person. Clients place weekly orders based on what’s available, and this role is what makes sure those orders actually reach their door.

Mission of This Role

For a lot of our Delivery Program clients, the Delivery Program Assistant is the only person from PCFB they’ll see face to face. The Delivery Program Assistant brings more than groceries. They carry our mission of dignity and joy in nourishment straight to someone’s door, often noticing the small things, a favourite snack, a treat someone mentioned once, that turns a simple delivery into a moment of real care. When a client isn’t able to come to the food bank, you make sure the food bank still comes to them.

This role reports to the Delivery Program Manager for daily operations. They split their time between the road (pickups and deliveries) and the warehouse (prepping, sorting, and organizing donations for the team), with the exact mix shifting depending on the season and what the program needs that week.

Responsibilities
Operations
  • Pick up donations around the Toronto area, coordinated by the Delivery Program Manager.
  • Deliver groceries to community members enrolled in the Delivery Program, including covering driver routes over the summer when the team needs extra hands.
  • Adjust pace and planning around seasonal volume shifts. Winter is the busiest stretch for deliveries (50%+ above baseline), and pickups spike heavily over the holidays.
Resource and Donation Management
  • Prepare incoming resource donations for the packing team, sorting through boxes and flagging what goes to Delivery versus Drop-In.
  • Set aside high-value or requested items like coffee, condiments, and treats, for the clients who’d appreciate them most, drawing on knowledge built through packing and client audits.
  • Receive and organize food donations, including sorting Daily Bread Food Bank deliveries and setting aside specialty items for volunteers to pack.
  • Keep the warehouse shelves organized and restocked throughout each shift so packing volunteers can find what they need quickly.
  • Track incoming donations in the team’s Discord channel.
Volunteer and Community Support
  • Support volunteers who need a hand across the warehouse, kitchen, drop-in, or delivery team.
  • Answer phones and greet visitors, directing them to the right person or resource.
  • Build relationships with clients through the client audit process, one of the more regular points of direct client contact in this role.
Qualifications
Must-Haves
  • A valid G driver’s licence and comfort navigating Toronto for pickups and deliveries.
  • Experience in a customer-facing role; regularly interacting with clients and volunteers
  • The ability to juggle multiple moving pieces at once and stay highly organized.
  • Comfort being the visible face of PCFB in the community, including appearing in photos donors sometimes take during pickups
Nice-to-Haves
  • Familiarity with Toronto’s food donation and supplier landscape
  • Experience or training related to workplace health and safety
  • Comfort using Discord or similar team communication tools
