As a member of the military, Drafting and Survey Technicians (DS Tech) provide both deployed and domestic drafting and survey support to the Canadian Armed Forces and other government departments worldwide.
Drafting and Survey Technicians belong to the Military Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces. Their primary responsibilities include:
Drafting and Survey Technicians are members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They may support all CAF exercises and operations, including those led by the Royal Canadian Navy. The primary work environment is an office setting, but fieldwork is also significant and conducted in approved weather conditions, 24/7, on bases, wings, or operational theatres. They utilize high-tech computer workstations and survey software. Employment locations include Kingston, ON, and Gagetown, NB, with potential postings to Brussels, Belgium.
No prior work experience or specific career skills are required. Recruiters can help assess if your interests and attributes match this role. The minimum education requirement is completing Grade 11 secondary education or equivalent, including applied math. Foreign education may be accepted.
Initial training involves Basic Military Qualification at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC. Subsequent specialized training occurs at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering at Gagetown, NB, covering land surveys, CAD, civil designs, construction stakeouts, and safety. Opportunities for advanced skills through courses and on-the-job training include geodetic surveys and design software.
This role is available part-time with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Reservists serve part-time at local units, with training paid, and may volunteer for deployments or relocations. They are trained to the same standards as Regular Force members and typically serve evenings and weekends, with pay at 92.8% of Regular Force rates, benefits, and pension eligibility.
