Job Description

I. Job Summary

The District Fleet Manager is responsible for managing the full fleet of primary and secondary equipment, focusing on achieving market base profitability through effective management of all fleet and maintenance activities within the assigned area, including cost control, management development, and high training and safety standards. This role oversees 10-15 direct reports and approximately 80 assets.

II. Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Ensures safe and reliable vehicles are available to meet operational requirements. Conducts fleet evaluations to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  2. Manages maintenance managers to ensure performance and cost focus across the area.
  3. Reviews capital equipment requisitions in line with corporate guidelines and objectives.
  4. Manages effective utilization of vehicle assets.
  5. Ensures maintenance shops are adequately staffed and mechanics are properly trained.
  6. Ensures vehicle management systems are effectively utilized.
  7. Complies with and ensures adherence to WM’s Mission to Zero standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.
  8. Meets all financial review dates and corporate programs in a timely manner.
  9. Assists in the budget process as required.
  10. Fosters a positive, team-oriented environment through employee development and motivation.
  11. Ensures cleanliness and maintenance of the maintenance shops through regular inspections and preventive maintenance programs.
  12. Oversees personnel needs including staff selection, coaching, training, and performance evaluation. Provides input on termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  13. Motivates, coaches, counsels, and disciplines managers according to WM policies, ensuring compliance with counseling and disciplinary standards.
  14. Provides training and presentations as needed in a professional manner.

III. Qualifications

  1. Required Qualifications
  2. Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or High School Diploma or GED (accredited) with 4 years of relevant experience.
  3. 5 years of previous experience (beyond education requirements).
  4. Preferred: Experience leading a team of mechanics in a large corporate environment.
  5. Valid Driver's License.

IV. Physical Requirements

  • This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copy machines.
