Qualifications

Director, Technical Safety and HSE @Corix

Type : Full-Time

Compensation :

150,000 - $170,000 per year (negotiable based on experience and education)

About the Role

Corix is seeking a Director of Technical Safety and HSE to lead our health, safety, environmental (HSE), and regulatory compliance programs. This role ensures the safe operation of our thermal energy plants and technical infrastructure across Canada and the US (particularly BC, Ontario, Washington, and Ohio). You will oversee compliance with relevant codes and regulations, including boiler and pressure vessels (BPV), and manage HSE programs and teams.

What you will do

  • Regulatory Compliance & Technical Safety Leadership : Ensure compliance with provincial, state, and federal regulations, including BPV, safety, and technical regulations (CSA, ASHRAE, NBIC).
  • HSE Management : Serve as the subject matter expert on technical safety, providing leadership on occupational health, safety, and environmental matters. Oversee the development, execution, and management of the company’s HSE framework, programs, and business strategies. Develop and review safety and emergency operating procedures for thermal plants and infrastructure.
  • Regulatory & Technical Representation : Help represent Corix to regulatory authorities on thermal, natural gas, and electrical systems. Provide technical guidance to teams for code compliance in engineering designs and asset management.
  • Audit & Performance Management : Assist with internal audits and as well as external audits with authorities. Ensure the business unit meets KPIs related to technical compliance and HSE.
  • Issue Management & Professional Development : Proactively address safety and environmental issues, manage related claims, and develop solutions for HSE incidents. Provide leadership and guidance for the professional development of direct reports.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting : Analyze HSE performance data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Assist Regulatory Affairs in preparing safety reports and responding to regulator queries.

What You Bring

Education / experience

  • Provincial Second-Class Power Engineer License (BC preferred) or US equivalent.
  • University degree in Mechanical or related Engineering discipline (asset).
  • Professional Engineer (Provincial or State) or eligible for membership in a professional association (asset).
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate (asset).
  • Extensive knowledge of Provincial and State Boiler Pressure Vessel Regulations, Health & Safety Acts, and industry standards as applicable to the utilities industry.
  • 7-10 years of experience in Power / Energy Production and / or Thermal energy distribution, with a comprehensive understanding of utility best practices.
  • Experience with engineering design, project planning, and control, particularly in complex thermal distribution systems and high-voltage transmission.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with AutoCAD and other engineering design software (asset).
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.

Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of BPV regulations, Safety Acts, and standards (NBIC, CSA, ASHRAE).
  • Understanding of workplace safety, health laws, and environmental regulations (e.g., WorkSafeBC, OSHA).
  • Expertise in thermal energy plant operations, design, and maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment and HSE compliance.
  • Advanced understanding of engineering principles for mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment with potential for remote work.
  • Travel to various sites, including energy plants, is required.
