Job description

Steel-Craft Door Products Ltd. is one of the premier Canadian manufacturers of building material products for the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. A private, family-owned business with more than 60 years of proprietary designs and innovations, Steel-Craft is known nationwide for its durable, Canadian-made garage doors that are engineered to perform in the country’s toughest climates. Our products are manufactured at our Edmonton, Alberta facility and distributed coast-to-coast through a strong network of dealership partners in every province across Canada.

We are proud to operate from our Edmonton-based manufacturing plant — the heart of our national operations — and are seeking a dedicated, strategic, and people-focused Director of Human Resources to join our leadership team. This role is a critical driver of our organizational culture, talent strategy, and workforce development initiatives, supporting a high-performing environment rooted in teamwork, innovation, and operational excellence.

THE DIRECTOR of HUMAN RESOURCES OPPORTUNITY

The Director of Human Resources will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for all HR functions across the organization, which includes a centralized manufacturing plant and a national network of wholesale/retail branches. This role is responsible for aligning people strategies with business objectives, supporting workforce planning, and driving a consistent and high-performance culture across diverse environments. Key areas of focus include talent acquisition and retention, employee relations, labour and employment compliance, leadership development, and compensation strategy, all tailored to both manufacturing and customer-facing operations.

Working closely with senior leadership and regional managers, the Director will play a critical role in shaping organizational culture, improving employee engagement, and ensuring scalable HR practices across multiple sites. The ideal candidate brings experience in both industrial and retail settings, a deep understanding of provincial labour laws across Canada, and a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach. This role is ideal for a collaborative, pragmatic leader who thrives in a fast-paced, growing business with a strong entrepreneurial culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic HR Leadership:

  • Develop and implement HR strategies that align with the company’s operational goals and growth plans.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on organizational development, workforce planning, and talent strategy.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of HR programs, policies, and systems across all locations.

Talent Management & Acquisition:

  • Oversee end-to-end recruitment processes to attract top talent across manufacturing, sales, retail, and corporate functions.
  • Champion internal development programs and succession planning initiatives to grow leadership capacity across the business.

Employee Relations & Engagement:

  • Foster a positive and performance-driven workplace culture through clear communication, coaching, and employee engagement strategies.
  • Act as a key resource for resolving complex employee relations matters, ensuring consistent application of policies and respectful workplace practices.
  • Design and maintain competitive compensation and benefits programs tailored to diverse employee groups.
  • Monitor industry trends and recommend adjustments to support retention and equity.

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations across provinces.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal requirements, including occupational health and safety, employment standards, and human rights legislation.

Operational HR Oversight:

  • Lead a small national HR team to deliver consistent HR support to managers and employees.
  • Oversee payroll administration, HRIS management, and employment documentation practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 5 years in a senior HR leadership role.
  • Experience supporting multi-site operations, ideally in both manufacturing and retail/distribution.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian employment legislation and provincial variations.
  • Demonstrated success in leading organizational change and building high-performance cultures.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Industrial Relations, or a related field is required.
  • A Master’s degree (e.g., MBA or Master’s in Human Resources Management) is considered a strong asset.
  • CPHR Alberta designation (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) is preferred; candidates actively pursuing CPHR will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta employment legislation, occupational health and safety, and labour standards is essential.
